When we speak to someone, our tone of voice carries more weight than we might think. Even if our intentions are good, the way we say things can linger in someone's heart long after the words have been spoken. A harsh or careless tone can echo in their mind, replaying moments that may hurt more than we ever intended. Those moments can be jarring, leaving behind an emotional bruise that's hard to forget.

It's so important to be mindful of not just what we say, but how we say it. The tone we use, the approach we take, and the words we choose can either lift someone up or tear them down. Everyone you meet is carrying something within them-struggles, fears, hopes-things we might never see.

So, in every conversation, choose to be kind. Speak with empathy and warmth, because your words have the power to heal, to comfort, and to show that you care. After all, the way we make others feel is often what they remember the most.

 Nay is 90

In the last several months, when I say Nay is turning 90 this year, I am awed by that. I needed to be here to witness this milestone. In truth, I am just beginning to understand what it means to live to be 64 (and I am turning 65 soon haha!) and yet Nay is 90!  Nine full decades, a very full and successful life.  She is to this day keeping up with the world still, ordering her food and supplies online, doing her banking online, communicating with family and friends on different platforms and being active on social media, etc etc.  And she still drives and if weather permits, she walks most days albeit slowly but surely.

And what she has gone through for nine decades puts my life to shame – imagine living through a world war, raising children (us siblings and some cousins here and there, and some of our friends here and there), and studying to be a lawyer while doing all that. She boldly made a life changing move midlife and became a lawyer in the US as well. She has been through headaches and heartaches aplenty and yet she still stands strong.  She was known to be smart and intelligent as a student and was always at the top of her class and now she is not just brilliant, she is also wise.  Nine decades does that to you, right?  I searched the bible (as I am wont to do these days) and it brought me to Job 12:12 – “Is not wisdom found among the aged?  Does not long life bring understanding?”

What is wisdom anyway?  And that question led me to Proverbs 4:5-11

5 Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or turn away from them.

6 Do not forsake wisdom, and she will protect you; love her, and she will watch over you.

7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom.  Though it cost all you have, get understanding.

8 Cherish her, and she will exalt you; embrace her, and she will honor you.

9 She will give you a garland to grace your head and present you with a glorious crown

10 Listen my son, accept what I say, and the years of your life will be many.

11 I instruct you in the way of wisdom and lead you along straight paths.

This must have been what Nay did.  She has always been choosing the straight paths, though it has not been easy especially since she was in a position where there was always temptation to stray and pursue other things.  We could have lived a different life had she not followed God’s instruction.

Thank you Nay, for living the life you did and giving us all that we need to pursue the straight path.  Not easy but we may live to be 90 as well and be full of wisdom and understanding too. 

At the very least, you have raised obedient children.  And we will celebrate your birthday in the simplest manner you have wished – no birthday party, just time with family.  Just the way we normally celebrated birthdays when we were kids and how we are celebrating birthdays now with the kids here in the US – just dinner but with birthday cakes. Your wish is our command, Nay.  

Happy 90th birthday po.  We all love you dearly.

 Julia Roberts once said:

“When people walk away from you, let them go. Your destiny is never tied to anyone who leaves you, and it doesn't mean they are bad people. It just means that their part in your story is over.”

These words remind us of a truth we often forget—that not everyone who enters our lives is meant to stay forever. People come into our lives for different reasons, teaching us lessons, sharing experiences, or walking with us through certain seasons. But when they leave, it's important to recognize that their role in our journey has been fulfilled, and our paths must now diverge.

Holding on to those who are meant to leave only delays your growth and keeps you from moving into the fullness of your own destiny. It’s not about rejecting or blaming the person who leaves, but rather understanding that your story continues beyond their chapter. Sometimes, their exit makes room for new opportunities, deeper connections, and the discovery of new aspects of yourself. Letting go is not always easy, but it is essential to step into the next stage of your life.

This doesn’t diminish the importance of the relationship you once shared. Every encounter holds value, shaping who you are and helping you grow. But when someone walks away, it's a sign that your journey no longer aligns. Their departure doesn't make them a villain in your life story, just someone whose role has come to its natural end.

When you free yourself from the weight of those who have left, you create space for people who are meant to stay and enrich your life in meaningful ways. Letting go isn’t an act of giving up; it’s an act of acceptance—embracing the flow of life, understanding that not everyone is meant to accompany you to every destination.

Remember, your destiny is your own. No one can take it away, and no one else can walk the path that’s laid out for you. So, when someone walks away, trust that it’s for your highest good. They were part of your story, but now the rest is for you to write, and it holds even greater promise.

Susan, a cherished daughter, sister, friend and a godmother (Ninang) to many, known for her kind, humble and generous personality, took her last breath on earth and breathed the air of heaven on Wednesday morning, October 23, 2024. Born on December 24, 1957 Susan lived

a life filled with tremendous passion and service towards others. She was survived by her 7 siblings: Romy, Ramon, Ronnie, Imelda, Ruel, Ruben Jr., Rowena and 13 nieces and nephews: Gizelle, Ralph, Kim, Kae, Kyla, Razel, Paul, Paula, Mike, Ruben III, and Mikael Ryan and great niece, Tatiana. Her love and care for her family knew no bounds. She provided for the education of all her nieces and nephews from elementary through college. She is now reunited in heaven with her Dad, Ruben Sr., Mom, Lustina, nephew, Ryan Kevin and niece, Luztina. Susan was an accomplished chemical engineer from Mapua Institute of Technology (MIT of the Philippines) and was employed for 37 years at Analog Devices Inc. (ADI). She was celebrated as one of the brightest minds in the field.Her unwavering dedication, innovative spirit, and exceptional leadership left an indelible mark on her colleagues and the industry. 1982-1985: Assembly Engineer and Manager at Dynetics, Philippines; 1985: Department Manager, Assembly Engineering, ADI Philippines; 1990: Department Manager, Quality, ADI Philippines; 1994: Quality Director, ADI Wilmington, MA; 1999: ADI Worldwide Quality Director; 2006: Director for Customer Quality Engineering ADI Worldwide Manufacturing; 2007: Environmental Health and Safety Director and retired in 2022.

“Susan was an incredible woman and an inspiration to all who know her, particularly the young engineers, male and female, who joined ADI. She is the single best example to all, aspire for great heights and you will achieve them. Susan through multiple promotions became a key leader for ADI and a beacon of what is possible no matter where you start in the company. I have always been proud of what we achieved in the Philippines, however I am incredibly honored to have worked with Susan for many years. I would always have her back.”

 Where do I begin? 🌻

I've been debating whether I should post this sablay photo of mine for a few weeks now. Three years ago, I couldn't look at this photo without feeling sadness and shame for not graduating on time, for not living up to people's expectations. Three years ago, I hid this photo in the deepest part of my closet and I almost forgot it even existed...

People would frequently ask me "Graduate ka na ba?" and I would say "Hindi pa eh," and just laugh uncomfortably. It would always hurt my heart when I see their disappointed faces.

Now, believe it or not, I'm just thankful for those three extra years I spent in UP. I learned to let go of the rigid standards I've set for myself and live a little 😉. I learned to appreciate the time I was given, to accept my limitations, and to truly be kinder to myself. I learned that there is no shame in asking for help❣️

After years and years, I can now look at this photo and just feel proud of what I was able to overcome. 

It took longer than expected, but I finally crossed the finish line I've been eyeing for years! I have nothing but gratitude for all the wonderful people who cheered for me until the very end.

To my friends, my batchmates, my UPMCE family (hi guys!), thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to check up on me. It's comforting to know you care enough to ask 🤗 Thank you for your words of advice and encouragement.

Container.

Container Identification System

1) Container Number – is of course the main marking on the door. It is an alpha numeric sequence made up of 4 Alphabets and 7 Numbers.

The container number identification system has been created by the International Standards Organization under their code IS06346:1995(E).

As per this code, the container identification system consists of:

Owner code – 3 letters (in this example ECM)

Equipment category – 1 letter (in our example, U denoting a freight container. Other categories being J for detachable container related equipment (such as Genset) and Z for trailers and chassis).

Serial number – 6 numbers (numbers ONLY)

Check Digit – 1 number (numbers ONLY)

The owner code is unique to the owner of the container and the registration of this code rests with Bureau International des Containers et du Transport Intermodal (BIC).

This is to avoid any duplication of code by any shipping line or container operator.

To find the owner of a container, you can always do a BIC Code Search to identify the rightful owner.

However, the owner of the container need not necessarily be operating the container as they could have leased the container to another operator or shipping line.

2) Check Digit – although it is part of the full container number, the check digit is an important number as it can be used to identify if the above mentioned identification sequence is valid or invalid.

For example, if you go to BIC’s Check Digit Calculator and type in the prefix – ECMU and the numbers 465749, see what you get as the Check Digit. It should come up as “6”.

3) Container Owner or Lessor – This is the entity that owns or operates the container. This could be a shipping line, like in this example (CMA CGM Group) or a container leasing company such as SeaCo who’s business is to lease containers to shipping lines that need to increase their inventory but not their assets.

4) Weights and Dimensions – In this example – 30,480 KG is the maximum weight that the container can carry including its own tare weight of 3,720 KG or 8,200 LB. This is the weight that the SOLAS VGM Certificate must show. In addition, CU. CAP. is short for cubic capacity, the volume of the container in cubic meters.

5) ISO Code – As per the International Standards Organization under their code IS06346:1995(E), each container is given a unique ISO Code in order to avoid any ambiguity in naming the container.

For example a standard 20′ container is called Dry Van (DV), General Purpose (GP), Standard (SD), Normal, Dry Container (DC) in different countries.

As these terms are all different, these terms cannot be used in uniform systems that are used for transmission of data across ports, customs, shipping lines etc. Therefore as a standard, the ISO code of 42G1 (in the example) is used to denote that the container in question is a 40′ container with a tare weight of 3,720 KG.

Here's a simplified guide to help you through the process and ensure a smooth transition of ownership.

𝗣𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺𝘀

𝙐𝙣𝙧𝙚𝙜𝙞𝙨𝙩𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙙 𝙎𝙖𝙡𝙚𝙨: If a property sale isn't registered and the title isn't transferred, future disputes can arise, especially if the original parties pass away.

-Registration Fee: 1 year from CAR release date + 6 months extension if approved by BIR.

-Submit required documents to ONETT for computation.

-Pay DST and CGT at the Accredited Agent Bank.

-Submit Deed of Sale and IDs.

-Submit CAR, Deed of Sale, and Transfer Tax Clearance.

-Pay the registration fee.

When a real estate agent or landowner offers a property for sale, the first step is to get a copy of the land title.

Investigate at the Register of Deeds using this copy to ensure the land is free of encumbrances such as mortgages, claims, or other issues. Verify that the copy matches exactly with the records at the Register of Deeds to confirm it is genuine and problem-free.

Step 2: Conduct a Relocation Survey

Hire a Geodetic Engineer to conduct a relocation survey of the land boundaries.

Ensure there are no structures or fences from adjacent lots encroaching on the property you intend to buy.

Step 3: Execute a Deed of Sale

If the land is problem-free, proceed to execute a Deed of Sale or "Contract of Sale".

Both the seller and buyer must sign the contract, and it must be notarized.

Step 4: Pay Documentary Stamps

Within one month from the notarization of the Deed of Sale, pay the Documentary Stamps.

This is a crucial payment that must be made promptly to avoid complications.

Step 5: Pay Capital Gains Tax

The seller must pay the Capital Gains Tax to the BIR (Bureau of Internal Revenue) because they earned from the sale.

The BIR will issue a Certificate of Authority to Register, certifying that all taxes have been paid and authorizing the transfer of the title to the buyer.

Step 6: Transfer Fees and Title Transfer

Once you have the Certificate of Authority to Register, take it to the Register of Deeds.

Pay the Transfer Fees, which are relatively inexpensive.

The Register of Deeds will surrender the Owner’s Copy of the title, and you will need to wait for the title transfer process to be completed. Continuous follow-up is necessary because the process at the Register of Deeds can take some time.

Following these steps ensures that the land purchase process is smooth and free from legal issues.

 TEN DRIVING TIPS FOR NEW DRIVERS

1. OBEY ALL TRAFFIC RULES

From road signs to right-of-way, there are rules drivers are required to understand and follow. Following the speed limit, leaving adequate space between you and the car in front of you, obeying traffic signals, and wearing your seatbelt are just a few of them. Learning and applying traffic rules will help you have a safe and relaxed time on the road — and it will help the other drivers around you be safe and relaxed, too. Plus, following traffic rules can help keep you away from traffic tickets, which are expensive and could raise your car insurance rates.

2. SLOW DOWN!

According to CDC. gov, "Teens are more likely than older drivers to speed and allow shorter headways (the distance from the front of one vehicle to the front of the next)." The higher your speed, the less time you have to stop your car, and the worse any impact and subsequent injuries will likely be. Braking distance increases exponentially at speeds over 45 MPH.

3. KEEP YOUR CAR IN GOOD RUNNING SHAPE

Taking care of your car can help you avoid breakdowns and other potential accidents. Car care includes regular oil changes and tune-ups, checking tire pressure (don't forget the spare!), regular tire rotation, checking brake fluid and coolant levels, and filling up the gas tank before it hovers too close to "E." For your car to take care of you, you need to take care of it. As a new driver, don't add to the variables of being behind the wheel by letting your car maintenance slide.

4. WEAR YOUR SEAT BELT

Always. And make sure your passengers wear theirs, too. "Among teen drivers and passengers 16–19 years of age who died in car crashes in 2018, almost half were unrestrained at the time of the crash (when restraint use was known)," reports CDC. gov.

5. AVOID DISTRACTIONS

Distracted driving claimed 2,841 lives in 2018 alone, reports the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. So keep your eyes on the road. That means no texting, no calling, no eating, no channel surfing on the radio, and no turning around to talk with friends in the backseat. Accidents can happen in a split second, but if you're paying attention, you'll have a better chance of avoiding one. 

One of the best tips for new drivers is to take the time to set yourself up for your drive while you're still in your driveway. Choose your music, set your GPS, put your phone on Do Not Disturb, and make sure any important communication is completed or paused before your drive.

6. ADJUST YOUR ACCESSORIES

No, not your bling. We're talking about making sure your seat is in a comfortable spot and checking all mirrors to make sure they give you visibility of your car’s blind spots. How to check? A vehicle overtaking from behind you should start to appear in the side mirror just as it’s disappearing from the center rear view mirror. As a tip for new drivers, especially, do this before you start your drive, not when your vehicle is moving.

7. DON’T TAILGATE

Following too closely is a leading cause of rear-end accidents. Just remember the 3-second rule: Pick an object on the road ahead (like a sign, tree, or overpass), and when the vehicle in front of you passes the object slowly count "one-one thousand, two-one thousand, three-one thousand." If you reach the object before completing the count, you're following too closely. 

Remember: if the car in front of you slams on their brakes and you rear-end them, it could mean a ticket for you, a lawsuit from the other driver, and an expensive bill from your insurer.

8. BE PREPARED

In case of accidents, breakdowns, or other emergencies, your car should always contain critical driving documents and an emergency kit with everything you'd need for an extended time in your vehicle. Ensure you have things like your vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and driver's license handy. A good emergency kit also includes water, non-perishable snacks, an emergency blanket, flashlights, road hazard cones and possibly flares, jumper cables, essential tools, and a small amount of the oil and coolant your car requires.

9. WATCH THE WEATHER

Rain, wind, and snow can all make driving more difficult and dangerous. If it's wet out, make sure your headlights are on, slow down, and increase your following distance. Braking takes longer when roads are slick — sometimes as much as ten times the braking distance as on a dry roadway. Most importantly, if the conditions are too treacherous, it's better to stay off the roads until you've mastered the art of winter driving.

 OUR STAGES OF ELIMINATION IN LIFE

1.⁠ ⁠At 60, the workplace eliminates you. No matter how successful or powerful you were during your career, you'll return to being an ordinary person. So, don't cling to the mindset and sense of superiority from your past job, let go of your ego, or you might lose your sense of ease!

2.⁠ ⁠At 70, society gradually eliminates you. The friends and colleagues you used to meet and socialize with become fewer, and hardly anyone recognizes you at your former workplace. Don't say, "I used to be..." or "I was once..." because the younger generation won't know you, and you mustn't feel uncomfortable about it!

3.⁠ ⁠At 80, family slowly eliminates you. Even if you have many children and grandchildren, most of the time you'll be living with your spouse or by yourself. When your children visit occasionally, it's an expression of affection, so don't blame them for coming less often, as they're busy with their own lives!

 THE BURNT TOAST THEORY💯

When things don’t go your way…

Last February, I had a flight out of Sydney that was cancelled several minutes after we were asked to get ready for boarding. The airline management announced that their engineer couldn’t get the aircraft to operate.

We were the only passengers left in the terminal. The airport had literally closed for the day already. You probably don’t know this but Sydney International Airport has a curfew for flights. No aircraft is allowed to fly in and out between 11PM and 6AM. 

We were asked to go through immigration again and then proceeded to collect our luggages. Afterwhich, we were given Uber vouchers so that we can all go home for the night.

Everyone started to be grumpy. Well, as expected. 

But my first thought was “thank God they managed to identify the operational/technical issue of the aircraft before asking us to board and eventually take off.”

This is where the Burnt Toast Theory comes in. It suggests that when delays happen or when things don’t go as planned, it could actually be a blessing in disguise. Those major or minor life’s inconveniences might actually be protecting you from something.

Essentially, if you burn your toast in the morning (something challenging happens), the time you spend making another slice may have saved you from a car accident or something bad.

Or maybe it causes you to be late for a meeting, but as you stroll in, you cross paths with someone who will become incredibly meaningful in your life that you wouldn’t have met otherwise. 

It’s kind of like the universe always has your back.

As what I always tell myself: 

If you get what you want, that is God’s direction. If you do not get what you want, that is God’s protection. You may not understand His ways but you just have to trust His will.

So the next time things don’t go your way, always remember that you are being redirected to something better.

 THINGS THAT CAUSE REGRET AT OLD AGE

When younger, we make various choice's without the future in mind. Sometimes those choices bite us in our mid-life. These are some of the things one might regret when they're older.

1. Marrying the wrong person

When you're young, check your motives for marrying. Don't marry to copy your peers, or for social standing or out of pressure. Marry for love and companionship, marry the right person, marry your best friend. For if you marry the wrong person or for the wrong reasons, you will have to put up with that person the rest of your life. Things might get worse between you two; then depression, physical abuse, affairs, pain, shame, court cases, bitterness will define your mid-life years all because you chose the wrong one. Things will get worse when children are involved. Make the right choice of a spouse when you are young.

2. The opportunities you did not seize

When you are younger many doors will open, you will get many chances. Many young people let these opportunities go because of fear, laziness, or pride; yet well younger and with more energy is the best time to start a venture and a name for yourself. Some think the opportunities are too big for them. Take advantage of them or one day when you're older you will want to go back and grab those missed chances.

3. The bridges you burned

When we are younger, we care little for relationships, what most think about is getting money and moving up the ladder of success at all cost. Many use and trample on people to progress, they take relationships for granted, messing up bonds, sleeping with people for personal gain. But these bad actions will catch up with you ahead. When you will realize how empty life is without love and friends. When you will have success but no one around you or no one to trust you.

4.The child you aborted

You are a young lady, you get pregnant and you are scared. You take the aborting option quickly thinking of that moment then. But when you are much older, you will look back and wish you kept that baby. When you will be rich and successful you will wish that child you gave up on would be around to enjoy the fruits of your hard work. Being a single mother doesn't mean you can't make it in life or you can't find a man in future.

5. The child you rejected

Young man, you impregnated a woman, she told you she's pregnant with your child. You rejected her and the baby and ran. But years later when you're 50 something, you will wish you were responsible, you will wish you manned up and became a father to that child. You will see that child excel and become an adult but will have no claim to that grown child who you rejected from the beginning. You will regret being a Dead Beat Dad by choice

 6. The marriage you destroyed

So you get married to your good fiance; the first months in marriage were good but shortly after, with your money and charm, you started having affairs. You became unfaithful. Your spouse begged you to stop, your children started hurting, your marriage was collapsing. One day when you are older, it will hit you how foolish you were to destroy the good marriage you had began to build for mere temporary thrills in affairs that did you no good. You will realize the damage you caused to your children and spouse.

7. The God you disowned

When you are much older you become wiser, God becomes more real as you see life in a more meaningful way. But don't wait to get older to start enjoying a relationship with God. Know God when you are young, build your future with God. Don't be a young rebel who runs back to God when age catches up.

8. The body you messed up

You have only one body to live with all your life. The cigarettes, the alcohol you are abusing, the drugs you are taking, the unhealthy food you're consuming; all that will destroy you slowly. When you are 50 and lifestyle diseases catch up with you, you will wish you took care of your body when younger, that you exercised more; but now the damage is done.

9. The time you wasted

The time you are wasting when younger in worry, wrong relationships, laziness, being a couch potato, giving excuses and pursuing meaningless things; you will never get it back.

10. The dreams and talents you shelved

Are you talented when young; are there things you love to do and you are good at them? Nurture those talents, exploit them, don't give up even if you encounter set backs, don't give up on your dreams. If you give up, when you're older you will look at your peers who stuck to what they love and made it and think to yourself, "That could have been me". Pursue a career, study a course you love. Don't waste years of your life in a field that doesn't fulfill you.

11 The name you defamed

When you are older, a legacy is very important, the value of your name is crucial. You will ask yourself what is your reputation, what are you leaving behind? Your legacy is a sum total of your actions since youthful days. We write our biography by how we live life everyday. When you look back your path and you see the mud you threw at your own name, the shame you attracted and the little value you have added to the world; you will regret.

12. The wealth you threw away

Are you riding on good money during your productive years? Earning good money? Don't throw away that money in clubs, reckless living and wasteful shopping. Invest with that money, widen your revenue stream, make that money work for you and keep it safe to take care of you in your older years. _"She was Dirty. I suggested she have a Shower. While Showering, I noticed her Clothes were Filthy and Threadbare. I threw them away."_

_"I gave her the Designer Jeans that you’ve had for a Few Years, but don’t Wear because you say they are too Tight."_

_"I gave her Underwear, your Anniversary Present from me, which you don’t Wear because you said I don't have Good Taste."_

_"I gave her the Sexy Blouse my sister gave you for Christmas, that you don’t Wear just to annoy her. 

I also donated those Boots you bought at an expensive Boutique but don’t Wear because someone at Work has the same Pair."_
