One morning at work, I noticed something off in the lobby—a homeless man standing near the security guard, looking exhausted and scared. I couldn’t just walk by, so I asked if he needed help. He said he needed to warm up, get some food, and have some water. I handed him a bottle of water and tried to take him inside to feed him, but the guard stopped me, citing the rules. Our office manager, Tom, arrived, kicked the man out, and reprimanded me.
Determined to help, I told the man to wait by the back entrance. We met later, and I took him to lunch, where we talked about life. Little did I know this small act of kindness would change everything.
Not long after, I arrived at the office to find everyone in a frenzy, whispering and clearly panicked. I asked a colleague what was going on, and she told me the shocking news: the owner of the company had passed away, and now no one knew what was going to happen to us or the business.
As if on cue, the elevator doors opened, and out walked a lawyer. My boss, Tom, rushed over, eager to make a good impression, practically throwing himself in the lawyer’s path.
But the lawyer didn’t even glance at him. “I’m not here for small talk,” he said coldly. “I need to see Nancy.” Every head in the office turned to look at me—after all, I was the only Nancy there.👇
