The Formula for Achievement

For share

The Formula for Achievement

As I got older, the more I realized that the formula for creating great achievement is very simple:

Abilities x Attitude = Achievement

Achievements all boil down to two things: The quality of your abilities multiplied by the quality of your attitude equals the quality of your achievements.
I know a man who is a genius and an eloquent speaker. If I rate his abilities, he's a "10”. Sadly, his attitude sucks. He's a "negative 5”. When you multiply his abilities with his attitude, his long-term achievements is "negative 50”
What is attitude? It's how you relate to everything around you. It's how you relate to people, to God, to events, to situations, to problems, to challenges…
But here's what many people miss: How you relate to what's around you is based on how you relate to what's inside you.
In other words, your Attitude is based on your Self-Worth. World-class people like themselves. World-class people celebrate who they are. World-class people enjoy their uniqueness.
An 8-Inch Mindset
One day, a tourist saw a fisherman busy fishing. The fisherman was very skilled as he caught a lot of fish. But the tourist noticed that the fisherman had this strange behavior. If he caught a big fish, he threw it back to the lake. But if he caught a small fish, he'd put it in his container.
After seeing the fisherman do this strange behavior many times, he had to ask. He went up to the fisherman and asked, "Sir, I couldn't help but notice something strange about what you do. Normally, we keep the big fish and throw away the small fish. But you do the opposite. You throw the big fish and keep the small fish. How come?”
The fisherman said, "Oh that's simple. I have a small frying pan.”
I've met a lot of people who are just like that fisherman. They're stuck with an 8-inch Mindset.
Friend, God wants to bless us with abundance. He wants to bless us with growth, promotions, favor, and increase. But we throw all these away because we think we don't deserve that abundance. Somehow, we think we're stuck with that 8-inch frying pan.
Instead of throwing out the fish, throw out the frying pan of our small thinking, small vision, and small self-worth—and start expanding your thinking.
Once upon a time, I was just like that fisherman.
I saw myself as poor. I told everyone I was poor. I couldn't wear the clothes I'm wearing now. I insisted on wearing the crummiest shirts. I couldn't hang out with rich and successful people because I feel very unworthy and uncomfortable in their presence.
Opportunities to earn money and grow my money were all around me, but I kept saying NO because I didn't feel worthy of becoming rich.
But one day, when I was 30 years old, I threw away my 8-inch mindset. I threw away my small thinking, small believing, and small dreaming. I began to dream big. Today, I don't have an 8-inch mindset. I have an 8-kilometer mindset. Yes, my frying pan is so big, if God has a whale of a blessing for me, I'd receive it.
Many years ago, I remember writing on a Dream Book that one day, I would donate one million pesos to the ministry. When I wrote it down, I laughed. The figure was so impossible. How could a poor guy like me do that?
But today, I do this regularly. And I'm happy to say that most of my dreams have already come true.
Friend, do the same and witness many great miracles unfold in your life.

May your dreams come true,
Bo Sanchez

Question?

Let's ask more questions. Ask "Why?" enough times. You might be surprised to find the answer that “This is the way it’s always been done, noon pa man. We have never thought of doing something else.”

This question might lead you to consider something better for your business this time.

Believe in yourself more.

"She's face the hardest time you could imagine And many times her eyes brought back the tears. And when her youthful world was about to fall in Each time her slender shoulders bore the weight of all her fears and the sound that no one hears still rings in midnight silence in her ears. Let her cry for she's a lady Let her dream for she's a child Let the rain fall down upon her Shes a free and gentle flower going wild..."

Support and Resistance.

support level is a level where the price tends to find support as it falls. This means that the price is more likely to "bounce" off this level rather than break through it. However, once the price has breached this level, by an amount exceeding some noise, it is likely to continue falling until meeting another support level.[2]
resistance level is the opposite of a support level. It is where the price tends to find resistance as it rises. Again, this means that the price is more likely to "bounce" off this level rather than break through it. However, once the price has breached this level, by an amount exceeding some noise, it is likely to continue rising until meeting another resistance level.

If a stock price is moving between support and resistance levels, then a basic investment strategy commonly used by traders, is to buy a stock at support and sell at resistance, then short at resistance and cover the short at support[9]

This is an example of support switching roles with resistance, and vice versa:
PaychexSupportResistanceChart.JPG
If a stock price is moving between support and resistance levels, then a basic investment strategy commonly used by traders, is to buy a stock at support and sell at resistance, then short at resistance and cover the short at support[9] as per the following example:
MicrosoftSupportResistanceTradingChannelChart.JPG
When judging entry and exit investment timing using support or resistance levels, it is important to choose a chart based on a price interval period that aligns with your trading strategy timeframe. Short term traders tend to use charts based on interval periods, such as 1 minute (i.e. the price of the security is plotted on the chart every 1 minute). Longer term traders typically use price charts based on hourly, daily, weekly or monthly interval periods. Typically traders use shorter term interval charts when making a final decisions on when to invest, such as the following example based on 1 week of historical data with price plotted every 15 minutes. In this example, the early signs that the stock was coming out of a downtrend was when it started to form support at $30.48 and then started to form higher highs and higher lows. This signals a change from negative to positive trending.[citation needed]

Why Teach

Due to insistent public demand.

30th Oath Taking Ceremonies of Professional Teachers Response

#whyteach

There were many times in college when my scholarship allowance got delayed. The money I earned from working parttime wasn't always enough and there were days that I had to choose between spending for food and spending on readings and other school requirements. During the worst days, I could only afford to eat once a day and this is when my roommate shared me her food or lent me extra money.

There was a time, when I was absent from school for three consecutive days kasi kapos po talaga. One of my Health professors called me, akala ko po katapusan ko na, and that I'm in for a lengthy lecture on why I was skipping class. As I answered the phone, I heard the voice of a very concerned woman, asking me if I'm alright. She asked me to go to school the next day. After our class, she asked me to stay to discuss some matters. She talked to me, asking why I hadn't been going to school. There, I felt like I'm talking to a friend, not a professor. For the first time in my life, I told my story to someone whom I am not in a close, personal, relationship with. I cried as I told her the struggles of coming from a broken family and being a self-supporting student. She hugged me, told me that everything will be alright. She handed me money afterwards. I refused to take it but she insisted that I need to take it so I can eat. As we parted that day, her words left a mark on mind, "Cess, you have great potential. Alam ko, lahat ng sakripisyo mo, may kapalit. You will reap the fruits of your sacrifices soon."

True enough, through the help our Almighty God, my scholarships and my ever-supportive parents, friends and special someone, I am now reaping the fruits of my sacrifices.

To the Professional Regulatory Board for Professional Teachers, proud parents, guests and to my fellow newly licensed professional teachers, a pleasant morning to all of you. Never did it occur to me that I will be given this opportunity to speak in front of the new heroes who will nurture the minds of the hopes of the future generation. I am very honored.

A lot of people have asked me before, why I chose this profession.  Pwede namang maging engineer, maging scientist, isang architect o isang doktor, pero bakit isang guro? Why Teach?

I heard a lot of discouragements from people around me, remarks like "You will not get rich if you choose teaching. It is just a waste of your skills. Marami namang ibang courses na pupwede ka" . I know I am not the only one who share this kind of story. Lahat tayo at some point in our lives encountered such words of.. disapproval. But do you know what kept me going? Listen to me when I say that there would be no engineers, no doctors, no businessmen and no professionals if there were no teachers.

Teachers, like you, me, and the professor whom I talked about earlier, play a very important part in the lives of our  students. We are like pebbles thrown into the ocean, creating ripples of knowledge and influence. We are in charge of nurturing the minds of the future generation. We are here to inspire the youth, to keep striving until they reach their goals. Let us give them the quality education that they deserve. We, the teachers, have the ultimate calling of finding and helping develop in each student their true potentials. We are here to keep them dreaming even when there’s only the littlest hope. We are here to keep the light of hope burning; a hope for a better quality education that is accessible to all; a hope for a better Philippines. Let us be the catalyst of change, the driving force to lessen the ignorance in the country. Let us be the hand to guide those that are blinded by the current system. Let us be teachers for the Philippines and teach for a better Philippines.

When you're on the verge of giving up on your students because of the low salary, limited facilities and limited materials, remind yourself: "This is for my students.”
When you have to use your own money to buy chalks, erasers and other instructional materials, remind yourself: "This is for the betterment of my students' lives."
When you need to give that one student of yours financial assistance just to make him or her go back to school the following day, remind yourself: "This could change his or her life.”

Teachers, I want you all to seek within yourselves the answer to the question I raised earlier: "Why teach?" I know we each carry a unique answer to that. Try to hold onto that answer, and let that answer keep you from losing interest in teaching. I believe that now is the time that the Philippines needs us more than ever.

Passing the LET is just a start. The real challenge begins inside the classroom. So let us step our best foot forward and keep it at that and be a better version of ourselves for our students.

Mabuhay tayong mga bagong guro ng bayan!

RULES WITHOUT A RELATIONSHIP ARE NOT OBEYED.

RULES WITHOUT A RELATIONSHIP ARE NOT OBEYED.

As parents, rules are needed for mutual understanding, respect and to avoid chaos.

Have you ever told your children to be at home by 7pm? Or, to finish their homework before they play, watch TV or go to a friend’s house?

Did they obey you?

They will if your relationship with them is strong.

In business, we need more than a good relationship. Business rules have to be “C.R.A.F.”-ted:

  • Clear,
  • Realistic,
  • Achievable, and
  • Fair.

When the rules are created, we need to be sure that everyone understood them.

And then, we need to be the first persons to follow these rules.  We need to set the example.

And most importantly, we have to take time to know each of our employees beyond work. We need to build a relationship with each of them because we are Pinoys.  With our culture, knowing them as people with their pains and dreams will go along, long way!

After all, our employees will be the ones to propel our business to success. If they trust and believe in us, they will follow and abide by our every rule.

Do you have employees who are a pain in the #@###?

Do they follow the rules even when you are not around?

What disciplinary actions do you give to employees who don’t follow the rules?

Are those effective?

Read. Learn. Apply.

Title of the chapter is “You Aren’t What You Drive”.
Sub-title: “They believe that financial independence is more important than displaying high social status”.

“Building wealth is not something that will change your lifestyle. Even at this stage of life, I don’t want to change the way I live.”
“Something interesting recently happened. I discovered I was to be given a surprise present (from several close business associates). A Rolls-Royce for a present. It was ordered for me…special color, special interior…(They) ordered it about four months before (I found out about it)…Still had about five months (before delivery)."
“How do you go…and tell somebody who (wants to) give you a Rolls-Royce that you don’t want it?”
“Why did Mr. Allan refuse to accept such a marvelous gift?”
“There’s nothing the Rolls-Royce represents that’s important in my life. Nor would I want to have to change my life to go along with (owning) the Rolls. I can’t throw fish in the back seat of the Rolls, like I do right now when I go fishing. I’m gonna have to get you all to the lake…I’m out fishing here every weekend. We have some of the best freshwater fishing in the country. Right out here…where I keep my fishing boat”.

How to make seed balls.

Seed Ball Recipe

2 parts potting soil
5 parts pottery clay mix from your local art store
1-2 parts water
1-2 parts seeds of your choice.
Large tub to mix ingredients
Large box to dry and store seed balls

Directions:
Mix the soil, clay and 1 part water thoroughly. There should be no lumps. Slowly add more water until the mixture is the consistency of the toy store molding clay that comes in a can. Add seeds.
Keep kneading the dough until the seeds are well mixed in.
Add more water if necessary. Take small bits of the clay mixture and roll into ball about one inch in diameter. The balls should hold together easily. If they’re crumbly, add more water.
Dry seed balls for 24-48 hours in a shady place before sowing or storing. They store best in a cardboard box.
Do not use plastic bags. The last step in how to make flower seed balls is sowing them.
Yes, you can place them carefully over the area to be planted or you can gently toss them one at a time, which is a lot more fun.
Don’t bury them and don’t water them. You’ve done your job, now sit back and leave the rest to Mother Nature.

Sickness reminds us to take care of our self.

For sharing.

Again, I felt the nudge from God in the form of my stomach ulcer.

My dear Ed Mateo
, self-care is important.

You mean time for myself, Mommy N?

Yes. Exactly!

These are activities outside of work that contribute to better performance at work.

Self-Care Is a Leadership Discipline

To me, self-care is eating a low carb diet, getting at least 8 hours of sleep, doing moderate exercise in the morning, connecting with people I love, taking time out to reflect and to meditate, helping someone grow, and listing down things I am grateful for each day in my gratitude journal.

The bigger our vision is, the more we have to focus on self-care.

I have since integrated self-care into my everyday routine last week. And, I’d like to share with you these two benefits I have been enjoying:

Benefit #1: Self-care gave me more energy. It is amazing how much energy I get just by investing time to do all the above.

Benefit #2: Self-care gave me an edge. Getting more sleep and eating healthy have removed my brain-fog and has kept my brain as alert as I was in my prime - in my 30’s.

Because of self-care, I am now a more effective leader for my teammates in each of our businesses.

This is one of the things that helped me and I am sure it will help you, too.  It will let you know where you are exactly on self-care. You can also get Michael Hyatt's The Busy Leader’s Self-Care Handbook for free.

I wish that you enjoy the benefits of putting yourself first.

Talk soon!

Build this now

I recently sent out an email with the subject line "You Need To Build This Now To Grow Your Business…(HINT: No Money Needed)"

In that email, we talked about how to be a great leader by communicating your trust, competence, and commitment so that you will be trusted by your people, customers, and suppliers. We also shared 2 of the many ways to build trust with our people.

When trust hurts

"I don’t think "trusting" is the best way to succeed and grow in business. There are some story in our company where our own staff takes money from it." - Gemma (not her real name)

Right after I got Gemma’s email, I saw Vice Ganda on TV  while I was having my nails done by my favorite manicurista.

"Bakit ganun yung mga bangko? Tayo, pinagkakatiwala natin yung mga pera natin sa kanila pero yung mga ballpens nila may tali!! Ano, nanakawin ba namin yun? Tayo nagtitiwala pero sila hindi?"

"Oo nga, ano?" I muttered under my breath.  In our businesses, our ballpens are also tied.

Why? Because if they are not secured, customers "run away" with them.  Not that they are dishonest, but either they were tempted or they just put it in their pockets automatically, without thinking.

They just did not know what they were doing.

And, by not securing our ballpens, we provided them the chance to run away with them.

At that moment, I felt Gemma’s hurt, and also, anger.

I have been in that dark place, many times in my 40 years in business.  I trusted too much and was betrayed. It hurts when the dog you are feeding bites you, what more if it was someone close to your heart?

I had to learn the lessons of trust the hard way.

When to trust your employees

This is what I learned:

After hiring a new employee whom I expect to do certain tasks and assume responsibilities, I should not trust her on her first day at work.  Not even after her first week.

Let’s say she is the cashier.

We wouldn’t expect her to report and just do the work, right? We won’t assume she already knows what to do, right?

  • She needs at least two days of orientation first.
  • She needs to be trained to deliver the quality of work and service, especially in using the software and hardware.
  • She needs to be able to do every single task from the time she gets into her cubicle until she leaves it during breaks or when the day ends.
  • She needs to know whom she should go to when she has questions.
  • She needs to know how and when she will be promoted and what her career path in the company is.
  • She needs to know what benefits she can expect now and at the other stages of her stay with us.
  • She needs to know what are the rules and regulations of our company to avoid getting into trouble.
  • Most especially, she needs to know that being dishonest will cause her to be terminated and sent to jail.
  • She needs to know that stealing is a criminal offense and that it is our policy to spare no expense to prosecute so that others will not be tempted to follow her example.
  • Finally, she needs to know that there are checks and balances in place so that any criminal act will surely be found out.

When the benefits and the consequences are clear and in place, the chances of stealing is minimized.

Yes, minimized.  Not totally gone.

When money is involved, we have to remember that no matter how holy a person is, no matter how good we are to her and her family, we can never predict that she will not be tempted.

Here are a few of the circumstances we have experienced when people were tempted to steal:

An employee could not say "no" to the friend who was selling him the latest model of a cellphone installment.  He also could not say "no" when another friend sold him his dream headphones. He was not able to keep track of his other utangs like canteen, clothes, shoes, etc. that he went into last month.  With so many creditors to pay, his take-home pay was not enough. What will he send to his parents and siblings in the province who are expecting his pera padala? His only thought was, what can I get from the office that I can sell? He was found bringing Disk Drives home!

My own inaanak who was also my employee loved his boyfriend to the moon and back.  His motorcycle was in the pawnshop and it was the last day that he could still redeem it before it will be foreclosed.  If he couldn’t come up with the money, he would lose the motorcycle forever. She could not bear it when he came to her, crying. So she stole five gold bangles and gave it to her boyfriend. She confessed when she learned that the police will be brought in to investigate.

A saleslady whose father was hospitalized did not have money to buy medicine. Payday was a few days away.  So, she "borrowed" a jewelry item from her estante and pawned it, with the intention to get it back when payday comes.  The auditor made her rounds a day before the payday and she was discovered.

The whole amount of a janitor’s salary was given to his wife and he would only be given a fare allowance per day.  But he was smitten by the waitress in the carenderia across us. She was a single parent and her salary was not enough to support her kids.  So, to be the knight in shining armor, he padded the price of the generator fuel everytime he would be asked to buy so he can help her and get some favors in return.

What we learned that worked

Every single centavo should be accounted for. Everything should be recorded. And, there is someone who audits it periodically and sporadically.

Without controls in place, we are actually inviting and tempting our employees to steal from us.

Let us remember always that as leaders,  it is our duty to take care of our employees.  We not only treat them well and pay them well, we should also protect them from temptation at all times.  When we protect them, we are also protecting ourselves.

Share how you did it

Do you have stories to share about dishonest staff?  Or do you have ideas on how to protect your employees from temptation that you want to share? Please join the Grow Your Business, Pinoy Movement and share them with us. Give and get support, advice, and recommendations from fellow Pinoy business owners. We are waiting for you here.
