But perhaps what we carry within us, our values, experiences, wisdom, relationships, and the things we’ve poured into others, can continue long after our own capacity begins to slow down.

That’s what I want to hold on. 🥰

To keep giving, keep serving, keep building, but in ways that matter.

For now, I just want to enjoy this season.

Do what I can, help where I can, and be grateful for the people and opportunities God continues to put in my path. ❤️

Novak Djokovic cried on court at the US Open, and it was not because he was losing a tennis match.

He has lost matches before. He is 39 years old with 24 Grand Slam titles and a career longer than some of his opponents have been alive. Losing is not what breaks a man like that.

What broke him was the realization.

Here is what actually happened on Sunday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Djokovic, chasing a record 25th major, lost to Mariano Navone of Argentina in five sets, 7-6, 5-7, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1, over four hours and thirty-five minutes.

But the scoreline hides the real story.

He struggled from the fourth game of the match. He vomited courtside, multiple times. He used an inhaler. He cramped. He took a medical timeout for his back before the fifth set. His wife Jelena watched from the stands with visible worry.

And through all of it, he was still winning. He took the second set. He took the third. He broke to lead in the fourth. For a while it looked like the old machinery would find a way, the way it always has.

Then Navone broke him in the fourth game of the deciding set, and Djokovic stood at the baseline waiting to return serve, and the tears came.

The crowd roared, willing one more comeback out of him. He had nothing left to give them. He won one of the last twelve games.

Afterward he was brutally honest, in a way that is difficult to read.

"When it comes to the match itself and the overall feeling of how I felt with my body and playing, it was really not enjoyable," he said. "I pretty much despised every moment that I spent on the court."

This was his first opening-round loss at a Grand Slam in more than twenty years. The last one was the 2006 Australian Open, when the man who beat him is now long retired and Novak was a teenager nobody had heard of.

Now look at who beat him, because it completes the picture.

Mariano Navone is 25. He had never won a five-set match in his life. He had never been past the third round of a major. He won his first ATP title only this year. By every measure of skill, experience, and pedigree, he was outclassed.

But he had one thing Djokovic no longer has.

A body that could go five hours.

That is the whole story, and it is the reason this hurts to watch.

Here is the lesson, and it is coming for every single one of us.

Your capability and your capacity are two entirely different things, and they peak at different times in your life.

Capability is what you know. Judgment, pattern recognition, tactical understanding, the ability to read a situation instantly because you have seen it a thousand times before. This keeps improving, often well into old age.

Capacity is what your body and your energy can actually execute. This peaks, and then it declines, and no amount of discipline stops it entirely.

Novak Djokovic's tennis mind has probably never been sharper. He understood exactly what to do against Navone. He simply could not do it anymore.

That gap between knowing and being able is one of the most painful experiences a person can have, and almost everyone reading this will face a version of it.

The surgeon whose hands are no longer steady. The founder who can still see the strategy but can no longer work the hours it demands. The parent who knows precisely how to help and no longer has the energy. The professional at the height of their judgment, watching younger people with half their wisdom simply outlast them.

And here is what the wise ones do about it, which is the actionable part.

They see the crossover coming and they build for it in advance. They convert capability into things that do not require capacity. Systems. Teams. Ownership. Teaching. Assets that produce without their physical presence.

The people who suffer most are the ones whose entire value depended on their own execution, right up until the day their execution left them. They never built the thing that outlives their energy, because when they had the energy it never occurred to them that it would end.

It always ends. For everyone. The only variable is whether you prepared.

One more thing worth saying about Sunday night, because it deserves saying.

Djokovic was down 6-1 in the fifth, vomiting, cramping, in visible pain and visible tears, in front of twenty thousand people and a global broadcast.

He did not retire. He finished the match.

Twenty-four Grand Slams, and he still walked to the baseline for a final game he had no chance of winning, because that is apparently who he has always been.

Whatever comes next for him, that is not a bad way to be remembered.

The body eventually says no to everyone.

What you built before it does is the only thing that carries forward.

In September 1991, a typhoon flooded 30,000 homes across low-lying northern Tokyo.

Japan started digging the following year.

What they built sits fifty metres beneath the outskirts of the city and is now called the Underground Temple. Five concrete silos, each 65 metres tall and 32 metres wide, connected by six and a half kilometres of tunnels. At the end of it, a chamber 177 metres long and 78 metres wide, its ceiling held up by fifty-nine massive pillars. When rivers rise, floodwater pours into the silos, travels the tunnels, and collects in that chamber. Then pumps push it out into the Edo River at up to 200 tonnes of water every second.

It took fourteen years to build and cost around 2.2 billion dollars.

Here is what it has done. The facility activates roughly seven times a year and has been used more than seventy times. Its site chief says it has cut the number of homes suffering water damage in the surrounding area by about 90 percent. Official studies credit that single facility with saving 148 billion yen in disaster cleanup costs.

And it is not even Tokyo's only one. The city has ten other underground reservoirs and three more flood tunnels, with additional projects still being built. Osaka is currently constructing something similar at a cost of 3.5 billion dollars, scheduled for completion in 2044.

Now, before anyone says Tokyo is simply rich, look at what Tokyo actually is.

It is a megacity cut through by more than one hundred rivers, built largely on a floodplain, sitting inside the same typhoon belt that produces the storms we get. Its geography is not easier than ours. In several respects it is harder.

Singapore is the second example, and its geography is also unkind. A small, low-lying, intensely tropical island that receives enormous rainfall in short violent bursts. Its answer was the Marina Barrage, a dam across the mouth of the Marina Channel completed in 2008. When heavy rain coincides with low tide, gates open and the excess drains straight to the sea. When it coincides with high tide, giant pumps push the water out instead. That single structure protects the low-lying heart of the city, and Singapore has reported reducing its flood-prone area from thousands of hectares in the 1970s to a tiny fraction of that today.

And then the Netherlands, which is the most extreme case of all. Roughly a quarter of the country sits below sea level. By any reasonable reading of a map, it should be uninhabitable.

What is instructive about the Dutch is not the size of their walls. It is that they changed their entire philosophy. After decades of building ever-higher barriers, they concluded that fighting water indefinitely was a losing strategy. Their Room for the River programme did something counterintuitive. It deliberately gave rivers more space, lowering floodplains, relocating dykes further back, and creating areas designed to flood safely so that towns would not.

They stopped trying to defeat the water and started designing where it was allowed to go.

Now here is the honest part, and it is the reason this post exists.

None of these were quick. Tokyo's took fourteen years of continuous construction. Osaka's will not finish until 2044, which is eighteen years from now. The Dutch programme spanned decades and multiple governments.

These are not projects. They are generational commitments, and they only work because each successive administration continued what the previous one started rather than beginning again.

That is the real lesson, and it is the least glamorous one. The engineering is genuinely difficult, but it is solved engineering. Other countries have already done it, published how, and in Tokyo's case will happily give you a tour of the result. What is hard is the continuity. Building something for fourteen years that only proves its worth in the years afterward, and that nobody gets to cut a ribbon on quickly.

There is also a brutal accounting truth buried in the Tokyo numbers.

That facility cost 2.2 billion dollars and has saved 148 billion yen in cleanup costs alone, before counting the homes not destroyed, the businesses not shuttered, the school days not lost, and the savings not wiped out.

Prevention is almost always cheaper than recovery. It simply arrives on a different schedule, and it is invisible when it works. Nobody films the flood that did not happen. Nobody thanks a tunnel for a quiet week. The entire reward for building it correctly is that nothing occurs.

Which is exactly why it keeps losing to more visible things, everywhere in the world, until a country decides otherwise.

So the point of this post is not comparison. It is proof.

Three countries with genuinely worse geography than ours looked at recurring flooding, decided it was unacceptable rather than inevitable, and then spent decades building their way out of it. Their citizens do not have to be resilient. They just have ordinary Tuesdays.

That outcome is not a fantasy and it is not a matter of luck. It is a design problem with known solutions, a long timeline, and a heavy price tag.

The engineering exists. The blueprints are public. Tokyo will literally show you around theirs.

What it takes is deciding, and then continuing to decide, for longer than any one term.

Last night, we were along EDSA coming from Parañaque when my Grab driver said, “Ma’am, iihi lang ako.” So we stopped at a gasoline station in Estrella, Makati.

The CR door had a digital lock, so he approached the station staff to ask how to use it.

Then the staff told him: ₱20.

TWENTY PESOS. JUST TO USE A TOILET.

My driver hesitated and pleaded, “PWD ako. Baka puwede na lang?” He even said that if he couldn’t use the restroom, he would just pee in a bottle instead.

The staff explained that he couldn’t use the restroom because there were CCTV cameras in the area, and that even using a bottle wasn’t an option. He needed to buy gas first before he could use the toilet.

I remember thinking:

“Dapat mag-gas ka pala para makagamit ng CR?”

So we drove to the next gasoline station just so he could use the restroom. Fortunately, their CR was open.

And it made me wonder: IS THIS WHAT CUSTOMER SERVICE SHOULD LOOK LIKE?

What if every gasoline station we stopped at charged ₱20 every time we needed to use the restroom? For someone driving all day, those fees could quickly add up.

And where do we draw the line?

Imagine going to a mall and being told you can’t use the restroom unless you show a receipt proving that you bought something there.

Then imagine every mall restroom having a staff member assigned to check your receipt before you’re allowed inside.

It sounds absurd when you put it that way.

Because a restroom isn’t necessarily a luxury. Sometimes, you simply need one because your body needs one.

I understand that businesses have expenses. 

I understand that establishments have policies. 

And I understand the need to keep restrooms clean and secure.

But perhaps this is still worth discussing.

ARE WE SLOWLY TURNING BASIC NECESSITIES INTO PRIVILEGES THAT PEOPLE HAVE TO EARN, PAY FOR, OR QUALIFY FOR?

₱20 may sound small to some people. But for someone earning per ride, every peso has a purpose.

Sometimes, the issue isn’t really the ₱20.

Una, walang masama sa pagiging cash buyer. In fact, kung may pambili ka ng cash, that’s a position of strength.

Pero kailangan din nating maintindihan kung bakit minsan ayaw ng showroom sa cash.

Hindi dahil ayaw nila sa pera mo.

Mas maliit lang ang opportunity nila kumita dahil maraming dealership kumikita rin sa financing, insurance, accessories, at other dealer products.

Pero Jayson, here’s my advice:

Huwag kang makipag-away sa agent. Makipag-negotiate ka.

Sabihin mo upfront:

“Cash buyer ako. Ready akong mag-reserve at magbayad, provided we agree on the final all-in price.”

That’s a very different conversation from:

“Cash ako, magkano pinakamura?”

The first one tells the dealer: I’m serious and I’m ready to transact.

The second one tells them: I’m here to squeeze you.

And remember, don’t negotiate based on the monthly payment.

Negotiate the total out-the-door price.

Ask for a written quotation that clearly shows:

* Vehicle price

* Discounts

* Registration

* Insurance

* Dealer fees

* Accessories

* Any mandatory charges

* Final cash price

Then compare that number with other dealerships.

And here’s another important piece of Tito Panda advice:

Don’t fall in love with one showroom.

If one dealer tells you:

“Sir, wala kaming unit.”

Okay.

Thank you very much.

Call another dealer.

Call another branch.

Ask for their stock.

Ask for their best cash offer.

***Because the moment they realize you’re ready to buy today, you become a valuable customer.

Now, if an agent tells you:

Don’t get angry.

Just smile and say:

After 10 years... 

➡ ICT grew from ₱10,000 to ₱153,125.

➡ BDO, BPI, and MER also ended higher.

➡ SM, SMPH, AC, MBT, TEL, and GLO were still below their July 2016 prices.

Your total ₱100,000 would have grown to around ₱232,066.

Okay sana.

Kaso ₱153,125 doon came from ICT alone. 😆

Without ICT, the ₱90,000 invested in the other nine stocks would be worth around ₱78,941.

Simple lang ang problema: nasa ilalim ng tubig ang malaking bahagi ng accomplishment.

Kapag classroom ang proyekto, puwede mong bilangin kung ilan ang ginawa. Kapag kalsada, makikita at masusukat mo kung gaano kahaba at kakapal. Pero sa dredging, hindi basta makikita ng ordinaryong tao kung 10,000 cubic meters ba talaga ang hinukay o 30,000 ang nakalagay sa accomplishment report.
