 Q - Byuda po ako, may mga pamilya na ang mga anak ko. Maginhawa po kami sa buhay kasi may mga negosyo ako. May nanliligaw po sa aking mas bata talaga at hindi kasing yaman namin. In fact, poor. Gusto ko po sana sya pero ayaw ng mga anak ko. Lolokohin lang daw ako. Please advice?

A - 1. Bukod sa talagang concerned ang mga anak mo sis, baka naman pino-protect lang nila ang mamanahin nila?

2. Yan ba namang edad nyo na yan, after all you've done, ay maloloko pa kayo ng bata?  Kung makuha man nya ang gusto nya, yun naman siguro ay dahil "pinayagan" nyo na rin kasi may kasiyahan naman kayo.  Eh ano namang may makuha ang bata kung may ligaya naman kayong tinatamasa?  Basta alam nyo ang limit at hindi kayo "maloloko" to the point na maubusan kayo ng assets! Ano ba ang gusto nyo, walang nakakapanloko pero wala rin kayong ligaya?  O may nakakapanloko ng konti pero may ligaya naman kayo? Bayad baga?! Ganun lang naman ang buhay. Sa kalagayan nyo ba namang may edad na kayo, byuda at baka nga lola na, ay umaasam pa kayo ng dalisay, busilak at tapat na pag-ibig ng isang binata? Be realistic, sis.

Tips

1) "Long-term Consistency Beats Short-term Intensity"

- start your review as early as you can, even before enrolling in a review center.  The more time you dedicate for your review, the less stress your mind will be during that period.

- be broad in board exam subjects, and choose questions and review materials wisely.  If you want to pass the board, choose board exam questions, not all questions are meant to be answered during your review period.  

3) Don't Settle for the Highest Score, Aim for the Perfect Score 💯

- this has been my mantra since I'm on my highschool until now that I passed the board exam.

4) Don't Compare Yourself With Other Reviewees, Compare Yourself With Who You Were Yesterday

- comparison leads to frustration.  We should always keep in mind that there will always be someone better than us.  Be humble, and focus on your own improvement during your review.

5) Rest is a Vital Part of Your Review

- a body well rested, is an efficient body.  You can do other things just to divert your focus for a while, but for me sleeping is the best break time activity. Pero mag-alarm ka dapat. 😄

Thus, considering same input/effort, more output comes from a well rested/more efficient body.

6) Do Personal Notes and Actively Recall Formulas Periodically

- personalize notes, don't just copy from the notes of others.  Manipulate the formulas in a form you can better recall. Know the derivation if you can, and try associating formulas of Math, MD and PIPE.

7) Eliminate, Delegate, and Concentrate

- always keep in mind that our board exam review is just a short period of sacrifice.  Think long term.  Learn to eliminate or atleast lessen other activities, delegate those tasks to others who can do it better, and then concentrate to your review.

8) Help Other Reviewees

9) Know Your Why

- there will come a time when you'll feel less motivated, that's when your "why" will fuel you to keep moving forward.

10) Pray, Trust God, and Do Your Part

- we cannot pray for an A, and study for a B.  Do your part.

The story is told about a nervous skydiving student who asked his instructor: “What will happen if the parachute does not open?” The instructor’s response was: “That’s what we’d call jumping to conclusions.”

In today’s Gospel (Luke 4,1-13), we hear of the temptation of Jesus in the desert where He was attacked by the devil physically, emotionally, and spiritually. He did not fall. He did not “jump to conclusions.” Why? Because He opened up to God. Yes, prayer is our parachute that opens so that we will not fall. When tempted, just pray and flee.

Our greatest temptation is that of selfishness. We know what is right and what is wrong, but we often succumb because of our human frailty, and because we give room for rationalization, compromise, and justifications. Remember, the devil is good in warfare using half-truths and empty promises. Careful. The remedy is just to pray, and flee. Pray, and the devil will flee, but we too must flee from the temptation, right away.

The call of Lent is that of fasting and abstinence from our material and physical attachments and addictions. In humility, we ask the Lord to purify us and heal us of our selfish wants and worldly desires. “One does not live by bread alone.”

We ask the Lord to heal us of our emotional wounds that lead us to become proud, angry, and arrogant. May the Lord heal us of our temptation for power and personal glory that make us want to be “worshipped” by others. “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him alone shall you serve.”

We ask the Lord to heal us spiritually and make us realize our need for Him. May we realize more and more that we must rely more on His grace, and less on our “merits” as we journey to His heart. May we focus more on His goodness, love, and mercy. “You shall not put the Lord, your God to the test.”

A young priest came to me for confession last week. I was so touched by his honesty, humility, and sincere desire to be at peace with God.
