Here’s an easy tomato growing guide
1. Seed Starting:
When: Start seeding in March (Zone 5b), 6-8 weeks before the last frost date.
Medium: Use coco coir mixed with worm castings/compost (1:1), or a seed starting mix.
2. Up-Potting & Growing Indoors:
Light: Provide 12-16 hours of light using a grow light or 6-8 hours of window sunlight.
Up-Potting: Transplant when 2-4 true leaves appear, using 4-6 inch pots.
3. Indoor to Outdoor Transition:
Hardening: Acclimate seedlings gradually to sunlight:
Days 1 & 2 - place under full shade
Days 3 & 4 - morning/late afternoon sun
Days 5, 6 & 7 - afternoon sun
Transplant: After hardening is complete, plant tomatoes deep and apply worm castings and chicken manure granules or balance fertilizer
4. Care:
Water: Keep tomatoes consistently watered.
Fertilize: Monthly with compost and a handful of organic chicken manure for calcium.
Flowering: Use high phosphorus fertilizer
5. Companion Plants:
Plant garlic, onions, basil, and French marigold nearby to deter pests and attract pollinators and beneficial insects.
