Thyroid

Hypothyroidism vs Hyperthyroidism: Know the Difference (Your Thyroid Matters!)

Your thyroid controls your body’s “speed”—energy, weight, heart rate, temperature, and mood. When it’s underactive (Hypothyroidism), everything slows down. When it’s overactive (Hyperthyroidism), your body runs too fast.

Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid)

T3/T4: Low | TSH: High

Common signs: weight gain, fatigue, cold intolerance, dry skin, constipation, slow heart rate, brain fog, low mood

Common cause: Hashimoto’s thyroiditis

Treatment often includes Levothyroxine (thyroid hormone replacement)

Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid)

T3/T4: High | TSH: Low

Common signs: weight loss, fast heart rate, heat intolerance, sweating, anxiety/irritability, frequent stools, shaky hands, insomnia

Common cause: Graves’ disease or toxic nodules

Treatment may include antithyroid medicines, beta-blockers, radioactive iodine, or surgery (doctor decides)

Why this matters: Many symptoms overlap with stress, anemia, or vitamin deficiencies—so don’t guess. The right blood tests (TSH + Free T4, sometimes Free T3) help confirm what’s really happening.

✅ Quick reminder: Don’t start/stop thyroid medicine without a doctor’s advice.
