Rejection.

 Rejection stings.

I was on my phone awhile ago, writing something when a little girl approached me and offered to sell fruits. I smiled at her and said, “Thank you, Neng. Pass muna.”

As soon as she left, I felt the sting of rejection. I said no to a little girl without even looking at what she was selling. Ouch!

For the next few minutes, I reflected on rejection.

1. When people reject you, it doesn’t necessarily mean there’s something wrong with you or lacking in you. Sometimes, the timing is just off. It’s nothing personal. (There’s nothing wrong with what the little girl was selling. I was just preoccupied witu writing).

2. Rejection hurts the person being rejected, but it can be painful to the one who rejected as well.

3. It’s okay to say no. It’s okay to feel guilty for saying no. It’s also okay to feel good for saying no.

I silently prayed, “God, give me another chance to give the little girl a chance.”

After a few seconds, I saw the girl again. I called her and asked her to sit beside me. Her name is Gene, 9 years old, 4th of 5 siblings. She helps her parents make money. We had a good chat. I bought rambutan from her, it was a lot. So I gave her about 1/3 of it and gave some also to Lola who sells Calamay and to another young woman who sells hats.

Thank God for giving me another chance and for this sweet encounter with little Gene.

Reminder to self: Stay open. Listen more. When you travel, make sure to give business not just to hotels and restaurants, but also to the sellers in the streets or by the beach. 💕

Flexibility

When I was working in the corporate world, rules were followed by the book. There were a few instances wherein I was done with my work for the day around 2PM. I asked if I can go home already. Of course not. Hehe. We had to follow the rules and go home at 5PM.

I knew my boss also wanted to let me and my officemates leave for the day but they had to follow the “rules.”

Now that I run my own business, I can afford to be flexible. Yes, we still have rules like what time to come in and what time to end work, but we can be flexible.

I told my team that at any given time, we will prioritize family over work. Mental health over work. Physical health over work. This precedes our rules.

In the middle of the day, my team can confidently ask,

“Ms. Sha, may I leave early today? We’re celebrating my Mama’s birthday.”

Or

“May I go off tomorrow? I just need to tour my visiting cousins around.”

Or

“I’m sorry I can’t focus at work today. I’m heartbroken. May I take a leave today?”

My answer would always be YES no matter how busy we are. We can do this because of one word — MALASAKIT (or CARE). This malasakit goes both ways. We care about each other. We care about our business. We care about our clients and the ministries we support.

I’m inspired to write this at the airport because of an experience where the airport ground officers were following their rules by the book, there’s absolutely no room for little consideration or care for the passengers.

It’s sad when people are following rules for the sake of following them, not for the purpose the rules were put in the first place.

As business leaders or employees, how do you feel about following rules by the book vs being flexible?

Experience

A young man went to seek an important position at a large printing company. He passed the initial interview and was going to meet the director for the final interview. The director saw his resume, it was excellent. And asked,’

“Have you received a scholarship for school?” The boy replied, “No”.

‘It was your father who paid for your studies? ” Yes.’ He replied.

‘Where does your father work? ‘ ‘My father is a Blacksmith’

The Director asked the young man to show him his hands.

The young man showed a pair of hands soft and perfect.

‘Have you ever helped your parents at their job? ‘

‘Never, my parents always wanted me to study and read more books. Besides, he can do the job better than me.

The director said:

‘I have got a request: When you go home today, go and wash the hands of your father and then come see me tomorrow morning.’

The young man felt his chance to get the job was high.

When he returned to his house he asked his father if he would allow him to wash his hands.

His father felt strange, happy, but with mixed feelings and showed his hands to his son. The young man washed his hands, little by little. It was the first time that he noticed his father’s hands were wrinkled and they had so many scars. Some bruises were so painful that his skin shuddered when he touched them.

This was the first time that the young man recognized what it meant for this pair of hands to work every day to be able to pay for his studies. The bruises on the hands were the price that his father payed for his education, his school activities and his future.

After cleaning his father’s hands the young man stood in silence and began to tidy and clean up the workshop. That night, father and son talked for a long time.

The next morning, the young man went to the office of the director.

The Director noticed the tears in the eyes of the young man when He asked him,

‘Can you tell me what you did and what you learned yesterday at your house?’

The boy replied: ‘I washed my father’s hands and when I finished I stayed and cleaned his workshop.’

‘Now I know what it is to appreciate and recognize that without my parents, I would not be who I am today. By helping my father I now realize how difficult and hard it is to do something on my own. I have come to appreciate the importance and the value in helping my family.

The director said, “This is what I look for in my people. I want to hire someone who can appreciate the help of others, a person who knows the hardship others go through to accomplish things, and a person who realizes that money is not his only goal in life”.

‘You are hired’.

A child that has been coddled, protected and given everything he or she wants, develops a mentality of “I have the right” and will always put himself or herself first, ignoring the efforts of parents, family and friends. If we are this type of protective parent are we really showing love or are we helping to destroy our children?

You can give your child their own room in a big house, good food, a computer, tablet, cell phone, and a big screen TV, but when you’re washing the floor or painting a wall, children need to experience that too.

After eating, have them wash the dishes with their brothers and sisters, let them fold laundry or cook with you, pull weeds or mow the lawn. You are not doing this because you are poor and can’t afford help. You are doing this because you love them and want them to understand certain things about life.

Children need to learn to appreciate the amount of effort it takes to do a job right. They need to experience the difficulties in life that people must overcome to be successful and they must learn about failure to be able to succeed.

Children must also learn how to work and play with others and that they will not always win, but they can always work harder to reach their goals. If they’ve done their best, then they can take pride in all the effort they put forth.

Life is about giving and serving and these qualities are taught in our homes.

Gossip

Here's why you should not GOSSIP.

In Ancient Greece, Socrates had a great reputation of wisdom. One day, someone came to find the great philosopher and said to him:

- Do you know what I just heard about your friend?

- A moment, replied Socrates. Before you tell me, I would like to test you the three sieves.

- The three sieves?

- Yes, continued Socrates. Before telling anything about the others, it's good to take the time to filter what you mean. I call it the test of the three sieves. The first sieve is the TRUTH. Have you checked if what you're going to tell me is true?

- No, I just heard it.

- Very good! So, you don't know if it's true. We continue with the second sieve, that of KINDNESS. What you want to tell me about my friend, is it good?

- Oh, no! On the contrary.

- So, questioned Socrates, you want to tell me bad things about him and you're not even sure they're true? Maybe you can still pass the test of the third sieve, that of UTILITY. Is it useful that I know what you're going to tell me about this friend?

- No, really.

- So, concluded Socrates, what you were going to tell me is neither true, nor good, nor useful. Why, then, did you want to tell me this?

"Gossip is a bad thing. In the beginning it may seem enjoyable and fun, but in the end, it fills our hearts with bitterness and poisons us, too!"

- Pope Francis

Reminders.

 SUNDAY MEDITATION

A reminder from a friend: LIFE is not a race. Take it slowly.

Hear the music before the song is over.

GOD seldom does things in a hurry;  so let us wait patiently.

Patience means awaiting GOD's time,

without doubting God's Love, Providence, and Sovereignty.
