Don't We All

Sharing this very timely post✌

*”DON'T WE ALL" ?*

I parked in front of the mall sitting inside my car waiting for my sons to get a few items from the supermarket.

Coming my way from across the parking lot was what the society would consider a tramp.

From his looks, he had no car, no home, no clean clothes, and no money.

There are times when you feel generous but there are other times that you are just not in the mood and don't want to be bothered.

This was one of those "don't want to be bothered times."

"I hope he doesn't ask me for any money,"  I thought.

He didn't.

He came and sat on the curb nearby but he didn't look like he could have enough money to even get a good meal.

After a few minutes, he spoke.

"That's a very nice car you got there" he said.

He was ragged but he had an air of dignity around him.

I said, "thanks," and continued listening to the car radio.

He sat there quietly, and the expected plea for money never came.

As the silence between us widened something inside me said, "ask him if he needs any help."

I was sure that he would say "yes" but I held true to the inner voice.

"Do you need any help?" I asked.

*He answered in three simple but profound words that I shall never forget.*

We often look for wisdom in great men and women and we expect it from those of higher learning and accomplishments.

I expected nothing but an outstretched grimmy hands.

He spoke the three words that shook me.

*"Don't we all" ?* he said.

I was feeling high and mighty, successful and important, until those three words hit me like a twelve gauge shotgun.

*Don't we all?*

I needed help.

Maybe not for bus fare or a place to sleep, but I needed help.

I reached in my wallet and gave him not only enough for bus fare, but enough to get a warm meal and few other things for the day.

Those three little words still ring in my ears till today.

*No matter how much you have, no matter how much you have accomplished, you need help too.*

....and again *no matter how little you have, no matter how loaded you are with problems, you can give help.*

Even if it's just a compliment, you can give that.

You never know when you may see someone that appears to have it all.

They are waiting on you to give them what they don't have -

*A different perspective on life,

*A glimpse at something beautiful,

* A respite from daily chaos, that only you through a torn world can see.

Maybe the man was just a homeless stranger wandering the streets.

Maybe he was more than that.

Maybe he was sent by a power that is great and wise, to minister to a soul too comfortable in themselves.

Maybe God looked down, called an Angel, dressed him like a tramp, then said, "go minister to that man inside the car, that man needs help."

**DON'T WE ALL?*

Help somebody, you are only a custodian of whatever you possess.

MY VIEW
*“Let’s spend this lockdown period to reflect on life’s true meaning. May Almighty God enlighten our hearts to what life truly is all about. We come, we go; the in between defines who we truly are.*
*Remain blessed"*
*God bless*

New Normal for Philippines Education System after Covid19.

FYI Po 📷:)
🚩 Wala na pong face to face class interaction ngayong school year.
Excuse me po 👐)
Portion by portion po yan.
In demand kasi 😅
🎶Huwag mahihiyang magtanong 🎶
🚩 This new normal is a shared responsibility of teachers and parents.
🔰 This NEW NORMAL is a great challenge for everyone -- parents, teachers & learners. Let's love and support each other. 🔰

Be Grateful

Skype meeting kahit dayoff heheh
Kidding aside, treat this as a contribution, your contribution to keep the wheels of this world rolling.
kinopya ko lang to.

If you are still working today, either at the comfort of your home or required to work onsite, be grateful.  Do your best to survive with your employers -- do not abuse and learn to appreciate.

Per DOLE, almost 2.6M employees in the Philippines had been displaced or lost their jobs due to COVID19 pandemic. This is expected to increase up to 5M Filipinos -- actual workers! On top of the number of unemployed Filipinos. Tough times nowadays.

If your employer now asks you to become effective, do more. Ask how you can be more productive.

If your boss asks you on your output, be more proactive and transparent. For sure, your boss' boss is also getting the efficiency and effectiveness pressure.

If your Manager requires more virtual meetings, attend and participate. Your Manager needs to ensure lines of communications are clear to achieve goals.

If you are asked to login on-time, check in ahead of time, be more responsive. It is never easy to manage teams and processes remotely.

If you received a task, be proactive to complete the activity before the deadline. Never wait for your Manager to follow through on you.

If you are still receiving your usual allowances in spite of lockdown, be thankful even more. The intention of continuing support is loud and clear. You must collaborate.

If your Manager keeps an eye on you, never complain. Your Manager also wanted to keep his job.

If your employer asks you to take mandatory time off, be thankful, balancing priorities are never easy as the market is non-responsive.

If you need to do personal things during your working hours, keep it at very minimum disruption to output. Output is always more important than input. Outcomes is what always matters, do your role and deliver.

Non essential industries are impacted with market decline - expect the possible worst recession in our lifetime, economies and public health are in priority conflict globally.

If you tend to forget, you signed up as a professional worker with clear roles to contribute and goals to achieve. If these are not happening right now, check yourself.

Be grateful. Appreciate what you have today. Not many people have the same choices and privileges as you.

Iba iba

So ayun na nga. Huwag natin isiping lagi tayong tama. Intindihin din natin ‘yung pinanggagalingan ng iba. Maging bukas tayo sa healthy na discussion. Ngayon kung talagang tama tayo. We can educate. There’s a proper way of doing that. Methods that doesn’t involve calling them out as bobo at tanga. Estupido at ignorante. Now after we educate them, let’s stop at that na. Huwag natin sila pilitin kasi may sarili din silang isip at paniniwala. We could always agree to disagree. Kasi at the end of the day.

I’ll just leave it right here. 😉

Stay safe everyone.

Love

Hilo

Maraming dahilan ang pagkahilo.
Kadalasan ay hindi naman delikado ito.

Mga possibleng dahilan:

Danger of facemask.

DANGER OF FACEMASK

PLEASE SHARE TO YOUR LOVE ONES

Mask is supposed to be used for a limited time. If you wear it for a long time:

1. Oxygen in the blood reduces.
2. Oxygen to the brain reduces.
3. You start feeling weak.
4. May lead to death.

*ADVICE*

A) Pull it off when you are alone. I see a lot of people in their car with AC on still wearing face MASK. Ignorance or illiteracy?

😎 Do not use it at home.

C) Only use it in a crowded place and when in close contact with one or more persons.

D) Reduce the use of it while isolating yoursef most times.

Stay Safe 👍😀👍😄👍

Medicines that are taken in isolation hospitals.

1. Vitamin C-1000
2. Vitamin E (E)
3. From (10 to 11) hours, sitting in the sunshine for 15-20 minutes.
4. Egg meal once .
5. Rest / sleep a minimum of 7-8 hours
6. Drink 1.5 liters of water daily
7. All meals should be warm (not cold).

And that's all what is done in the hospital to strengthen the immune system

Note that the pH of coronavirus varies from 5.5 to 8.5. Therefore, all we have to do to eliminate the virus is to consume more alkaline foods above the acidity level of the virus such as Green lemon
Yellow Lemon, Avocado, Garlic, Mango, Tangerine, Pineapple, Watercress, Oranges which when metabolized will give high pH levels.

Wishing you all good health and longevity .

Fabunan covid19 vaccine

MARAMI NANG NAGPATUROK SA FABUNAN DOCTORS AT LIGTAS NA SA VIRUS SA ZAMBALES (Sana all 😭)

Isipin niyo to!

Halatang may humaharang.

We don't need any issues here! We just need the Fabunan Doctors sa critical situation na to!

“Drink water from the spring where the horse drinks. A horse will never drink bad water.

Make your bed where the cat sleeps.

Eat the fruit that was touched by the worm.

Freely pick the mushrooms on which the insects sit.

Plant your tree where the mole digs.

Build your house where the snake suns itself.

Dig your well where the birds build their nests in hot weather.

Go to sleep and wake up with the chickens and you will reap the golden grain of the day.

Eat more green vegetables, and you will have strong legs and an enduring heart.

Swim more often and you will feel on land like a fish in the water.

Look at the skies more often and not at your feet, and your thoughts will be clear and light.

Keep silent more often, speak less, and silence will reign in your soul, and your spirit will be calm and peaceful.”

Era circa 70

AKO, IKAW, TAYO....PANAHON NATIN ITO.  WE BELONG TO DA BEST ERA.

This is so true 😊🙂👌🏼 The Baby Boomer Era vs The Millennial Era.

A youngster asked his grandfather "Grandpa! How did you people live before with:
No technology
No aeroplanes
No internet
No computers
No dramas
No TVs
No aircons
No cars
No mobile phones?"

Granddad replied:
"Just like how your generation live today
No prayers
No compassion
No honor
No respect
No character
No shame
No modesty"

We, the people born between 1940-1970 are the blessed ones...
Our life is living proof.
👉While playing and riding bicycles, we never wore helmets.
👉After school, we played until dusk; we never watched TV.
👉We played with real friends, not internet friends.
👉 If we ever felt thirsty, we drank tap water not bottled water.
👉We never got ill sharing the same glass of juice with four friends.
👉We never gained weight eating plates of rice everyday.
👉Nothing happened to our feet despite roaming barefoot.
👉We never used any supplements to keep ourselves healthy.
👉We used to create our own toys and play with those.
👉Our parents were not rich. They gave love.. not worldly materials.
👉We never had cellphones, DVDs, play station, XBox, video games, personal computers, internet, chat - but we had real friends.
👉We visited our friend's home uninvited and enjoyed food with them.
👉Relatives lived close by so family time was enjoyed.
👉We may have been in black and white photos but you can find colourful memories in those photos.
👉 We are a unique and the most understanding generation, because we are the last generation who listened to their parents....
and also the first who have had to listen to their children.

CEO Reflections on a Reordered World

Dear Colleagues,
We are now almost two months into our great experiment of working remotely and I have been pleasantly surprised at the ease with which many of us have shifted to a virtual workplace. Zoom and other teleconferencing tools have made it possible for us to stay connected, while far apart.
While the line between work and private life has all but disappeared, I urge all of you to take time for yourselves. An “always on” mentality does not create more productivity; in fact, studies have shown that taking time away from your desk—to walk, to exercise, to play with your kids—can spark creative thinking.
To foster my own creativity, I have started to block time each week to think about the future—what will society look like post-COVID-19? What will be important to people after this pandemic has passed? And closest to my heart, in a world that will certainly suffer economic damage for a period of time, what will our customers need from ADI? How can we continue to keep innovating, especially in a recessionary environment where many companies will not survive?
While the suffering from COVID-19 will stay with us all for some time, there is reason to be optimistic about ADI’s place in this reordered world. I can envision a few of the opportunities that will be available to us:
Contactless commerce. Almost overnight, there has been shift in the way people and businesses work with the fast-paced growth and adoption of contactless commerce that comes with social distancing. We’ve all probably experienced this firsthand with the dramatic rise of e-commerce and entertainment services from Amazon, Netflix, Spotify, and so on. For ADI, digitalization of our services has been underway for many years, but the intensity of virtualization that we are now experiencing may fundamentally change how we work to best serve our customers. We must redouble our efforts to make it even easier for customers to choose and use our products.
A reimagined healthcare system. The healthcare system has revealed its fragility, and I believe that there will be a renewed focus on the need for accessibility, affordability and wellness globally. The need to bring intelligent and precise sensing of patient conditions is something that ADI is well suited to lead. And, this will be become more prevalent as we move to telehealth and other remote healthcare options due to economic imperatives and health and safety needs.
A hybridized supply chain. The global supply chain has, in more recent times, been slowly fracturing for political reasons. COVID-19 has shone a spotlight on the potential to reorder the global supply chain with an emphasis on closer proximity between the sources of demand and supply. In order for this to happen, automation systems will need to be deployed. This could be the window of opportunity for Industry 4.0 to deploy at scale—and our industrial solutions can help accelerate that transformation.
Constant Connectivity. As I noted, cloud-based tools, like Zoom, are making it possible for many of us to be very productive while out of the office environment. For example, we conducted our first virtual board meeting without the need for planes, trains and hotels. In addition, my staff and I have been effectively conducting customer meetings and business reviews during this time of quarantine. Our communications business—both wired and wireless—will benefit from the need for robust infrastructure to deliver the bandwidth needed by an increasingly online population.
Blue Skies and Clean Air. The rapid slowdown in economic activity, though massively destructive to many livelihoods, has delivered benefits that were unimaginable just a few short months ago.  We’re witnessing large decreases in carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrous oxide. I’m sure many of you have seen photos of pristine skies in Delhi, New York City or Los Angeles. This makes me wonder how we, as individuals, and ADI, as an industry leader, can be better stewards of our planet. COVID-19 has demonstrated our capacity to adapt and mobilize on a grand scale – now is the time to use our power as a company to step up our sustainability innovation and partnerships. The sustainability opportunity also opens a new way of thinking as we explore making working remotely a part of ADI’s culture.
One of my favorite authors, Nassim Nicholas Taleb, wrote a book called “Antifragile: Things That Gain From Disorder” following the 2008 financial crisis. In this book, Taleb writes that certain systems in nature, business and society actually thrive when they are stressed, when randomness takes root, and chaos is the order of the day. He calls these systems “antifragile”, which is another way of expressing durability. Antifragile systems have an ongoing ability to create, to learn and to adapt at a pace faster than their competitors.
Over our 55-year history, ADI has proven to be an antifragile entity. We have survived crises and captured value during waves of change. While COVID-19 is a unique event in our lifetime, ADI’s resiliency and innovative culture have carried us forward—and will continue to do so. Our strength lies in our individual contributions and collective genius that are always focused on solving our customers’ hardest problems.
Thank you all again for your dedication during this time and your desire to keep the engines of ADI running productively in this unusual circumstance.
Stay safe and stay healthy,

Secretary Carlos Dominguez III, Department of Finance:
1. Top 10% in the world in economic resiliency. The best in Southeast Asia.

2. The sound policies of the President have made our economy strong. This is approach of saving for the rainy day has given us ample space to finance the fight against COVID-19.

3. Inflation in April is 2.2%.

4. We should reinstate the Build Build Build Program.

5. Hire contract tracers en masse to provide jobs. We temporarily lost 1.2 to 1.5 million jobs.

6. To attract foreign investors, this will involve the immediate passage of the CITIRA, or TRAIN package 2.

7. We must promote manufacturing with inelastic demand such as food. Support the whole food value chain, production, food markets, etc.

8. Our problem is that people are not buying things. We have to stimulate demand. Build Build Build. Push food production.

Secretary Carlito Galvez, National Chief Implementer:
9. We cannot endure ECQ for an extended period of time. We have to balance health and economy.

10. According to WHO, any plans to ease ECQ, hinay hinay lang po to prevent resurgence of the disease.

11. Plan is COVID-carrier centric. End to end TEST, TRACE, TREAT mechanism.

12. We have more or less 20,000 stranded OFW in Manila.

President Duterte:
13. It must be very clear to the people why they can or cannot work.

20. I assure you, there is no corruption allowed. I have fired several officials.

21. It’s an extreme rare privilege to serve in the Government.

22. The lockdown will be explained thoroughly by Secretary Roque. The new normal.

23. The easing up of restrictions, hindi ibig sabihin wala na ang COVID. Dahan dahan lang para di tayo madapa because we cannot afford a second or third wave.

24. Do not go out of your house without a mask. This is a must. Must comply. Kung wala kang mask, you endanger the person in front of you.

25. Social distancing is the new life. Until such time na meron ng vaccine.

26. COVID is very lethal. Can go either way, tulog sa punerarya or sa bahay ninyo.

29. I had a nightmare on the distribution of the SAP. Takot ako baka ma kurakot ito. Ma cuttingan ito. I will ask Secretary Bautista to request his former colleagues sa military na magpatulong siya sa pag distribute ng pera.

30. I have nothing against males, pero ang empathy at puso ng mga babae bilin ako. The female members of the AFP may help in the distribution.

31. These coming days, you’ll see more of the fighting spirit.

(Annotation: KLARO YAN HA! 👊🏼)

33. We are at the disposal of our destiny.

34. Maraming salamat po.

Secretary Harry Roque, Presidential Spokesperson:

May 8 Bianca Umali

In commemoration of her mom’s birthday and her dad’s death anniversary, Bianca Umali wrote a letter to her late parents.

Sa tuwing dumarating raw ang May 8. it brings happy and painful memories.

“A day both my guardian angels share,” she said poignantly, “one for birth and the other for death.

Today raw happens to be her mom’s 59th birthday, at 10th death anniversary naman ng kanyang ama.

Pondering on life’s uncertainty, Bianca intoned, “is not the way it’s supposed to be… it’s the way it is… the way we cope with it is what makes the difference.

“Life is short,” she further stated, “time is fast, no replay, no rewind, so make the most out of every moment as it comes.”

Tatlong bagay raw ang kanyang natutunan sa buhay: [1] be kind [2] appreciate the simple things in life. [3]say ‘i love you’ while you can.”

At this juncture, Bianca said both to her mom (May Soler Umali) and dad (Jose Vicente Umali) how much they mean to her.

“but there are no words to describe how much I admire you, how much I appreciate you, how much I thank you… for everything.

“I will never have enough time here on earth to repay all the the love you have poured into me. I love you.

“Daddy, this long… already?

“For all those times I left it unsaid. Thank you. For being both a mother and a father.

“For being there for me, for showing the way, for being patient with me even when I made it difficult for you, for believing in me and encouraging me to dream, and being such an inspiring presence in my life.”

Nami-miss raw niyang ang pag-buntot-buntot sa kanyang daddy at nami-miss raw niya sila (her mom and dad) ‘every second of every single day.

“Everything I am is for and because of you. Stay inlove. Mahal na mahal ko kayo. until we meet again… Your daughter,”B”

Since then, she has lived with her loving paternal grandmother Lola Vicki. DAPAT LANG! | PETE G. AMPOLOQUIO, JR.

Retirement Don't miss it.

Retirement

1. one day you will retire. You won't be going to work. You won’t have office power any more. No influence or at best, a reduced influence. Your cash flow will also reduce.! Check retirement date on your payslip.

2. Always  go for your 30days annual leave. Whatever you do during your leave, is what you will be doing when you retire. If all you do is to sleep or watch TV, then that’s what you are likely do do in your retirement. Remember the book of Proverbs. A little sleep and a little slumber, so shall your poverty multiply.
Watching Big Brother Naija will not save you heartache in retirement. Learn a trade or a skill during your leave. It will come handy. Spend your after-office hours learning something. Don’t spend it sleeping, Gossiping, watching TV!! Same goes for your weekend. Make them productive. You will thank yourself for spending your time productively.

3. Invest for your retirement... your children are not retirement investment. Don’t bank on your children’s support or the support of friends or relations. That’s a BIG risk. It may not happen. Be ready to take care of yourself!! Everyone has his own responsibilities. They won’t be able to help you that much. You will also lose your dignity and respect if you adopt a life of begging.

4. Start a hobby early in your working days to take you along when you retire. Rearing chicken, farming or own a shop. Acquire marketable skills ( not useless paper certificates) Etc

5. Where shall you retire. Build yourself a home. Don't retire and start to rent a house or refuse to vacate government house. You will be at the mercy of your landlord at a time when your cash flow is not only reduced but unpredictable!!

6. Who shall be your dependants. By the time you retire, your children should be above 18, and self reliant.

7. Don't retire and stay in a big city unless you can TRULY afford it. You can't continue living in a big city after 60 with limited financial resources. The language and the hustle will be hard for you. Where possible, Relocate to a less expensive town where your reduced take home (pension) can go further.

8. Have property which can be rented or converted into cash. Have shares that pay good dividends. Plant cash trees. Rear goats, cultivate vegetables etc. these activities will not only give you income but will also keep you healthy.

9. Live a simple life. If you never built a house at your rural home, dont use your retirement package to build. It is unwise unless you plan to live there on a permanent basis or you are super rich and therefore can afford the luxury. The choice is yours.

Note that many of retirees die early because of the following:

1. They are Not mentally prepared to retire.
2. Lack of finances
3. They Lapse into Depression
4 They develop Hypertension/ Diabetes because of worries, anxiety and uncertainty "and financial pressures.

YOUR DESK AT YOUR WORK PLACE IS NOT PERMANENT. PLAN  FOR YOUR RETIREMENT.

How

How do temperature settings affect air con costs?

The harder your air conditioner has to work, the more electricity it will consume. That means the lower you set the temperature when cooling and the higher you set it when heating, the more you’re adding to your power bill.
It is difficult to pin point how much your air conditioner temperature is contributing to your air con’s electricity usage cost, however Ergon Energy estimates that every one degree cooler in summer adds around 10% to the amount of electricity that the air conditioner uses. Using the Ergon air con cost calculator, you can see how small changes to the cooling temperature can make a considerable difference to the cost of using an air conditioner.

What is the right sized air conditioner for your home?

An air conditioner should generally have at least 80 watts of output per square meter of room you intend for it to cool or heat. If a room is larger than the air con was designed to cater for, then it will be less effective at controlling the temperature – while your remote control might say the air con is set to cool to 24°, the room temperature might actually be 28°. Conversely, if your room is too small for the air conditioner, the air con will over shoot the temperature that you intended to set it to. Below is approximate guide to ideal air con capacities given the room size.

Aircon thermostat settings.

The 1-10 setting on your thermostatonly affects how cold the room has to get for the A/C to cycle off. At a guess,1 is around 80 °F / 26.6^C and 10 is around 60 °F/ 15.6^C. Turning the dial to a higher number does not make it cool any better, it just keeps it running longer.

Glazer is correct. A little more info on the settings. The 1-10 setting on your thermostat only affects how cold the room has to get for the A/C to cycle off. At a guess, 1 is around 80 °F and 10 is around 60 °F. Turning the dial to a higher number does not make it cool any better, it just keeps it running longer.

The high/low settings do affect how much cooling it does. The high fan setting will use more electricity and not just from the fan itself. The amount of air flowing through the unit over the evaporator (cooling) coil affects how much work the compressor has to do to cool that air. The temperature of the air is another factor. Hotter air = more work and thus more electricity.

A final note about A/Cs in general, not just window units. The temperature of the air outside has a large affect on the energy the A/C uses. I could write a long boring post about the freon cycle with temperature-enthalpy diagrams, but in simple terms, heat flows downhill, from warmer towards cooler. In order to make the rather diffuse heat in your home flow out into the warmer outdoors, that heat has to be concentrated so that it is warmer than the air outside. The warmer it is outside, the more work has to be done to concentrate your home's heat so that it can be rejected outdoors. The upshot of all of this is that the cooler it is outdoors, the less energy your A/C will use to cool your house. So it is much more efficient to cool your house at night. If you have good insulation, you can "cold soak" your house overnight - getting the air and everything inside nice and cool while it's cheaper to do so, then turning up the setting in the morning and letting the temperature coast back up for a while.

Diosdado Banatao

The Beacon Academy was honored to have innovator Diosdado “Dado” Banatao accept our invitation to be the Academy’s commencement speaker for 2017. Here is his full speech:

--
BEACON ACADEMY COMMENCEMENT SPEECH 2017
by DIOSDADO "DADO" BANATAO

When I sat down to write this speech, I realized how hard it is to compose a meaningful message to a much younger generation like you, the graduates. I have given speeches to industry, academe, engineering and scientific conferences and that was relatively seamless.

I had to reach back to my younger days in elementary, high school, and early college years, to put together some collection of ideas that may possibly mean something to you as you move on to define your future lives. Added to that difficult task is the difference in family status between yours and mine. You see, I grew up in a poor family, my father was a rice farmer, did not finish high school and my mother only finished 6th grade.
Let me then tell you a bit of my life experience and lessons learned along the way.

My grandmother on the father side was the principal of the small elementary school in our barrio and one morning took me to school to start first grade at five years old. I took it for granted, that was the norm. It seems strange now but at first grade we learned arithmetic using 20 bamboo sticks. No memorizing of charts and numbers.

I have to admit, we had fun moving sticks. At that early age, I thought mathematics is fun. Apparently, that method is now called Singapore math. Amazing! In this little poor barrio we were far ahead of everyone. Of course, I had no idea about these things then.

Unfortunately, I was the only member of the graduating sixth grade class from that barrio school that went to high school and college. The rest of my classmates went back to the farms to help their families.

On my 3rd grade, my father left for Guam to become an overseas worker, a handy man in a grocery store. Initially, that was tough but we all got used to him not being with us. He did visit us once a year during his 7 years abroad.
This event taught me my first lesson in life:
At seven years old, I learned that doing household chores is not only learning how to do things, but more importantly helping the family. At that very young age, there was no help at home in studying or doing homework. Reading at night is an adventure due to lack of adequate light.

Lesson 1: “Work is part of life regardless of age and the more one gets involved, the more productive one can be”.

For example, my older brother and I cooked our own breakfast of rice and the cream of heated carabao milk before we go to school. I used to go to school early so I could help one other classmate clean and polish the wooden floor of our classroom before our teacher arrived. At such an early time in the morning, I felt I already accomplished a lot. Learning new things from the teacher the rest of the day were just a reward.

Going to school sometimes was an adventure when weather was hot or stormy, with just rubber slippers or most of the time, barefoot. My father’s leaving home to work in another country was something I did not understand and thought it was a normal event. Years later, after, having saved enough money to buy a larger piece of land that he can farm, he returned permanently to live with us. He wanted for us to go to school and have better careers more rewarding than farming. He had a strong desire for us, the children, to have much better lives than he and my mother had. This was another lesson for me:

Lesson 2: “If one desires to have a much better life, then commit and do what it takes regardless of difficulty and sacrifices one has to go through”

My early life’s path is very similar to my father’s life. Another lesson I learned from both my father and mother was how they conducted their lives and conversations with us, their children.
My mother, who also went through those sacrifices during the time my father was away, instilled in us an inner strength and strong discipline in going about chores. She never lost her composure, always quietly telling us our misbehaviors. My father always told us to study hard and that he will do the hard work as a farmer. On our part, the children, we never complained doing our work first with very little time to play.

Lesson 3: “Never measure a person by outward evidences but always by his or her heart”

During my years in high school, my mother put me in a small boarding house run by two sisters. I had a very small room with a proportionally small desk and bed. That Jesuit high school, Ateneo de Tuguegarao, was typical of Jesuits where we had plenty of homework every day. I was there all alone, freshman at eleven years old, doing homework without anyone to talk to and get some advice.

I have to admit, there were many evenings doing homework, feeling lonely, and missing my family, with tears. But I had no option but to bear it, not complaining because of our family situation. I believe my excellent grades in high school were mostly due to those kinds of circumstances.

Lesson 4: “Life is not fair and it is not a reason to make excuses or quit. Keep on doing what is required and rise above everyone else”

Our high school academic advisor, having observed my proficiency in physics and mathematics, suggested I should study engineering. With no questions asked I agreed and told my mother and father, who returned home permanently in my third year in high school. He then accompanied me to register in electrical engineering at the Mapua institute of technology.
It is important to note that my parents agreed with the advice of my school’s academic advisor.

We have seen too many parents ignoring their sons or daughters aptitudes and desires, substituting their forceful opinions, which usually lead to student failures in achieving their goals in life.

Lesson 5: “Learn your passion and intellect and apply it to a long term approach to career building and planning your life”

A result to this lesson is this lesson:

Lesson 6: “Whatever you do good or bad, those actions will affect you for the rest of your life”

You, the graduates, are graduating from an excellent school, equipped with deep knowledge in all expertise necessary to move on to the next phase of your lives.

Continue to focus on learning, acquiring more knowledge, but more importantly, use critical thinking.

Congratulations!

Analog vs Digital.

Just my share of thoughts regarding Analog and Digital TV and some questions that needs to be answered (at least legally, so let the legal experts resolve this). At least this is from what I understand since I'm an ECE graduate.

First, what we might know for a fact:

1. The common television broadcasts use ANALOG technology, which is prone to fading, snow, and ghosts (yes, there's ghosts! but not the one you are thinking of). Analog TV operates within the UHF (300 MHz - 3 GHz) band, also known as the decimeter band. Each tv channel operates within a specific frequency. Example, DZBB-TV (also known as GMA Network Inc.) is operating at the UHF Channel 15 (479.143 MHz).

2. Currently there is the emergence of DIGITAL TV which reproduces crystal-clear picture without fading or interference. Of course, this is what we want! The problem is, older Analog TV cannot receive digital transmission. So we need a new type of receiver. Nowadays, we buy digital tv receivers (TV Plus and the likes).

3. Digital technology also enables TV stations to broadcast multiple channels with different programming under the same frequency. For example, ABSCBN Corporation under UHF Channel 16 (485.143 MHz) was able to have several LCN's (logical channel numbers) or digital channels within their allocated frequency. This includes Knowledge Channel, O Shopping, Jeepney TV, MYX. However, the same ABSCBN Corporation also have operations under UHF Channel 43 (647.143 MHz) which includes Sports+Action, CINEMO!, YEY!, DZMM Teleradyo as well as KBO. KBO is a pay-per-view digital channel, meaning you need to pay first before you can watch its shows.

The question is, why ABSCBN has two UHF frequencies in NCR being used? Is this two separate franchise contracts? Are this just ok for one TV Network to have two UHF Channels? If you look at the list of digital television stations, TV5 Network Inc is also using two UHF channels (Ch18, 497.143 MHz and Ch51, 695.143 MHz). The only difference between ABSCBN and TV5 is that TV5 do not have "encrypted" digital channels whereas ABSCBN has lots of them and you can only watch thru a digital box called TV Plus. Also, TV5 do not have pay-per-view digital channel while ABSCBN has KBO.

So this issue question onto why ABSCBN is doing pay-per-view under a program (in this case, KBO) that is operating under a frequency that is government-owned or regulated? I think this is the hurdle onto why their franchise application is having problems since 2014.

TIMELINE: ABS-CBN franchise

TV network ABS-CBN faces an uncertain future.
The Lopez-owned network’s franchise is yet to be renewed by Congress, while its most recent authority to broadcast has been put in peril after Solicitor General Jose Calida asked the Supreme Court to void it.
Apart from its flagship ABS-CBN channel, the media conglomerate also operates other brands such as ABS-CBN Sports and Action, DZMM Teleradyo, cable channels ABS-CBN News Channel or ANC, Cinema One, Jeepney TV, Knowledge Channel, Metro Channel, Myx, and global channel TFC.
The network also started offering digital TV boxes which carries KBO, a channel airing Filipino movies. This was one of the two issues raised by Calida in asking the high court to revoke ABS-CBN’s franchise.
This is the first time for the oldest TV station in the country to go through problems with franchise renewal, with numerous bills set aside as the country faced the Taal volcano eruption and the COVID-19 pandemic in the months running up to the expiry of the franchise on May 4, 2020.
Here’s a timeline of events:
June 14, 1950: Republic Act No. 511 is passed giving a temporary permit for Bolinao Electronics Corporation to operate a television station in the Philippines. The firm is renamed Alto Broadcasting System in 1953, patterned after the first names of its new owners Aleli and Tony Quirino, the brother of former President Elpidio Quirino.
February 24, 1957: Lawyer and businessman Eugenio Lopez Sr. buys the company from the Quirinos. This leads to the merger of ABS and Chronicle Broadcasting Network or CBN.
June 21, 1969: RA 5730 becomes law, which converts Bolinao Electronics Corporation’s franchise into ABS-CBN.
September 21, 1972: ABS-CBN, along with other networks and affiliate stations, are told to go off the air while media assets are seized as then-President Ferdinand Marcos puts the entire nation under martial law. Media content is controlled by the state.
September 16, 1986: ABS-CBN resumes daily broadcasts nearly seven months after a "people power" revolt toppled the Marcos regime.
March 30, 1995: President Fidel Ramos signs RA 7966 granting a 25-year franchise to ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation. The renewal comes five years ahead of the expiry of its franchise. This took effect May 4, 1995, taking into account the 15-day window after its publication in a newspaper, Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra has explained.
September 11, 2014: Isabela Representative Giorgidi Aggabao files House Bill 4997 under the 16th Congress, in the first attempt to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise ahead of its March 2020 expiration. This does not get past the committee level.
May 6, 2016: Former Senator Alan Peter Cayetano, President Rodrigo Duterte’s running mate for the presidential elections, gets a Taguig court to issue a temporary restraining order stopping ABS-CBN from airing TV commercials against Duterte. The said ads are supposedly paid for by members of the opposition.
November 10, 2016: Rep. Micaela Violago of the second district of Nueva Ecija files House Bill 4349 seeking to renew the network’s franchise, followed by a similar bill drafted by brothers Davao City Rep. Karlo Nograles and PBA Party-List Rep. Jericho Nograles. Both remain at the committee level.
November 8, 2018: Duterte unleashes one of his public rants against ABS-CBN for failing to air his campaign advertisements for the May 2016 elections. He curses the network’s chairman emeritus Gabby Lopez and called him a thief, saying he will reject the renewal of ABS-CBN’s franchise.
Duterte previously slammed the media conglomerate for its supposedly unfair labor practices, and earlier challenged the network to accompany him to the central bank to open his bank accounts, amid news reports that he had undeclared wealth.
July 1, 2019: Violago refiles her bill for the franchise renewal on the second day of the 18th Congress, with 20 other House members signing up as co-authors of the measure. Ten other bills are filed to give ABS-CBN a fresh legal mandate.
July 28, 2019: Senator Ralph Recto files a similar bill to extend ABS-CBN’s franchise for another 25 years. Sen. Leila De Lima later asked to be co-author of the measure.
December 3, 2019: Duterte says he will personally “see to it” that ABS-CBN will be out of business by 2020. He later tells the Lopezes to just sell the network to a new owner.
December 4, 2019: Palawan Rep. Franz Alvarez, chairman of the House Committee on Legislative Franchises, says they would not tackle the bills on ABS-CBN until the end of that year. House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano says the measures can be taken up early 2020.
February 10, 2020: Calida heads to the high court with a quo warranto petition against ABS-CBN, saying it committed two grave violations of its existing franchise. He claims the network allowed foreign owners to control the company by selling Philippine Depositary Receipts to them, and offering KBO as an entirely new TV channel.
The network refutes Calida’s claim, saying it did not violate the law. The court asks ABS-CBN to respond to the points raised in 10 days.
Media groups denounce the petition as a direct attack on freedom of speech and of the press.
February 12, 2020: Committee Vice Chairman Isabela Rep. Antonio Albano Jr. apologizes to the estimated 11,000 workers of ABS-CBN for delays in discussing the franchise renewal. He says the pending measures are already being discussed among solons behind closed doors.
Cayetano vows that the House will be “impartial” in tackling ABS-CBN’s franchise.
The House committee tackling the measure still has no scheduled hearings on the bills as of Thursday, February 13.
February 18, 2020: Calida asks the Supreme Court to issue a gag order to stop ABS-CBN and its representatives from discussing the quo warranto case which he filed against the network.
In his "very urgent motion," he asks the high court to issue the order that bans "parties and persons acting on their behalf" from releasing statements discussing the merits of his plea to forfeit ABS-CBN's existing franchise. He said this violates the sub judice rule, which prohibits anyone from publicly assessing an ongoing case to avoid pre-judgment.
ABS-CBN Corporation and ABS-CBN Convergence, Inc. were given up to five days from receipt of the new petition to submit their response to the gag order plea.
February 20, 2020: ABS-CBN CEO and president Carlo Katigbak admits the media company's shortcomings and vows to correct them.
February 24, 2020: Guevarra tells the Senate Committee on Public Services that the National Telecommunications Commission can give a provisional authority for ABS-CBN to continue operating. He added that based on "equity," the network should be allowed to stay on air even when its franchise expires on May 4, 2020.
February 26, 2020: The House of Representatives writes to the NTC asking to issue the network a provisional permit so that it can continue broadcasting pending the passage of a bill renewing its franchise.
In a speech, President Rodrigo Duterte accepts Katigbak's apology. He tells the network to just donate the ₱2.6 million the network owed him in political ad refunds to charity.
March 5, 2020: Lawyer Larry Gadon files a “writ of prohibition," asking the Supreme Court to stop efforts of House members authoritizing NTC to issue a provisional permit for ABS-CBN's continued operations.
March 10, 2020: NTC Commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba told the House Committee on Legislative Franchises that it will issue a provisional authority to ABS-CBN, saying it will heed Guevarra's advice.
March 11, 2020: Congress goes on recess without passing any of the bills granting a fresh 25-year franchise to ABS-CBN.
May 3, 2020: On World Press Freedom Day, Calida tells NTC officials that they may face graft charges if they grant a provisional permit to ABS-CBN after its 25-year franchise expires, saying the network will have "no valid and existing legislative franchise" beyond May 4.
May 4, 2020: ABS-CBN’s franchise expires.  Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque says the government will implement whatever the decision of the NTC will be on the fate of the media giant.
May 5, 2020: NTC orders ABS-CBN to stop its broadcast operations due to its expired franchise, and gives a 10-day window for the media giant to explain why the regulator should not recall its occupied frequencies.
