When to replace your vehicle's brakes:

Brake Pad Wear

The brake pads on your vehicle are designed to wear down over time as they are used to slow and stop your vehicle. Most brake pads have a recommended replacement interval of anywhere from 30,000 to 70,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and pad material. You should inspect your brake pads regularly and replace them when they get down to about 1/4 inch of pad material remaining.

Brake Rotor Condition

The brake rotors, also called discs, that the brake pads clamp down on can also wear out over time. Rotors should be inspected for uneven wear, grooves, cracks, or other damage. Rotors may need to be resurfaced or replaced if they are worn beyond the manufacturer's minimum thickness specification.

Brake Fluid Condition

Brake fluid can absorb moisture over time, lowering its boiling point and compromising braking performance. Brake fluid should be flushed and replaced every 2-3 years, or per the vehicle manufacturer's recommendations.

Brake System Noises

Squeaking, grinding, or other unusual noises from the brakes can indicate a problem that needs to be addressed. These could signify worn pads, damaged rotors, or other issues.

Pedal Feel and Responsiveness

If you notice the brake pedal feeling "spongy" or requiring more pressure to stop the vehicle, this could mean there is air in the brake lines or another system issue.

The best way to know when to replace your brakes is to have them inspected by a qualified automotive technician on a regular basis, such as during routine maintenance. They can accurately assess the condition of all brake components and make recommendations for replacement as needed to ensure safe, reliable braking performance.
