I don’t believe this was a case of SUA (Sudden Unintended Acceleration), nor do I fully accept the driver’s claim that another car suddenly passed in front of him, causing him to mistakenly press the accelerator instead of the brake. The CCTV footage doesn’t show any vehicle cutting him off, so his explanation seems unlikely.

The driver was likely distracted, possibly focusing on the passengers he had just dropped off. My guess is that when he tried to leave, he shifted the gear to Drive (D), but it only engaged Neutral . He then released the parking brake and pressed the gas pedal, but since the car was in neutral, it didn’t move.

Frustrated, he may have pressed the accelerator harder, still getting no response. Realizing the gear was just in N, he shifted to D without lifting his foot off the gas pedal. This sudden engagement of the transmission—while the accelerator was still pressed—caused the SUV to lunge forward uncontrollably, leading to the tragic collision that killed two and injured five.
