While walking in nature earlier, I overheard two women chatting.
One of them said,
“I regret resigning from my company a few months ago. The salary was high, the work was easy, and the benefits were great.”
“You know why I left, right? Because of my workmates.” She continued.
That brought me back to my days as an employee in HSBC.
Though my work was not in line with my passion, I liked my workmates and my direct leaders—and even our department heads and CEOs. I saw the company as a great place to work in because of the people. So I stayed there for 9 years and I did my best to become the kind of employee I would want to hire if I were an employer. It was the only company I worked for as an employee before I eventually ventured into book writing and speaking full-time.
People stay because of people.
People leave because of people.
In today’s fast-changing world—especially with the rise of AI—it’s more important than ever to double down on human connection.
When employees feel connected, they stay.
